Anyone do a lighthouse tour?
Have a few weeks this fall to kill before we head to AZ for the winter.
Thinking of a north to south tour of all the east coast lighthouses. Anyone do this before?

No, but what a great idea! I have visited some lighthouses in Maine, and the one in Saint Augustine, FL (since I live here). Keep us posted if you decide to do it.

I think it's pretty much a go. Looks like mid October. Then hightail it across the south to Quartszite for the winter. 2015 is Alaska for a full year.

Sounds wonderful--will watch for more info! We have been volunteers at Cape Hatteras & Yaukina Head Lighthouse. The history is fascinating.

Our area, the midcoast of Maine, is a great place to see lighthouses. We have four within a few miles of our house, and several more not too far away. The lighthouse at the entrance to our harbor, the Burnt Island Light, is open to tourists during the summer and maybe early Fall. They have a lightkeeper, his wife, and two children enacting the way it was in the early 1950's. There is a tour boat that takes you there from the harbor. If you do need information on the Boothbay Region, look us up.

I'm going to compile all my findings and put together a small caravan. Dates places and more details to follow.

NC has several lighthouses along the coast. This website shows them.
http://www.carolinalights.com/north-...na-lighthouses
There are also a few less popular lighthouses along the inland water way and other navigable rivers. My favorite of these smaller ones is Price's Creek Lighthouse. It is a mile or so up the Cape Fear River from the Atlantic Ocean. It's only about 20' tall. It's abandoned, nothing spectacular about it (except it's history), a relic of times past. It was built from brick imported from England in the mid 1800's and used during the Civil War. It can be seen only by boat. The public ferry that leaves Southport goes right by it but many people miss seeing it. It would be possible to see it while towing the Airstream if you use the ferry to cross the Cape Fear from Fort Fisher to/from Southport. (I recommend reservations if you use the ferry) If you are interested in touring this area PM me.

If you are going down the Outer Banks to the Cape Hatteras and Ocracoke lighthouses, be aware of the ferry rides involved. There is about a 45 minute ride from Hatteras Island to Ocracoke Island and from Ocracoke there is a 2 1/4 hr ferry ride to Cedar Island. If you are going to take in the Cape Lookout lighthouse you would want to go to Cedar Island and drive toward Morehead City and turn left towards Harkers Island before you get to Beaufort/Morehead.
The Hatteras ferry used to be free and may still be, but the Ocracoke ferry is a toll ferry. You can get to all except Ocracoke light by road but it involves a lot of backtracking. And Fall is the best time to be there!

....and the Cape Lookout Lighthouse requires a short ( 10 min) boat ride from Harkers Island, but the marinas there run there all day long.

Being from the east coast this may be heresy, but the lighthouses of the Great lakes are unbeatable.
