Any super nice private (non-cheesy) campgrounds in Maine?

I'm a down to earth kinda guy, but I'm gonna say it... Most private campgrounds that I've visited have been GROSS. Of course, we've found some exceptions to the rule -- but for the most part they are overcrowded, sites are too tight, dirty, and they are so not what we are after (to be in nature as much as possible).

Can anyone reccomend some good private campgrounds in Maine? The state parks seem to be booked out for eary Sept

I know what you mean.
Up in York Harbor is a very nice campground right on the water - Libby’s Oceanside Camp

For deep woods camping, we like The Cathedral Pines campground in Eustis. Surrounded by Red Pines. So quiet and peaceful. No sewer, though. Worth the drive for us.

In Lubec Maine stay in the most eastern RV park in the USA. Sunset RV Drive across the bridge to Canada and see the summer home if FDR have high tea while there, see Quoddy Head Lighthouse eat at Franks dock side cafe have the pancakes with Maine wild blueberries, watch the tide change at least 20 ft. .

Come up and visit us at Boothbay Harbor, midcoast Maine. We store our Airstream at Shore Hills RV Park (because we own a house in Boothbay Harbor and go to Florida in the winter). Shore Hills is rated highly, and looks great.

Check out Sabao Lake Campground. 11 miles up a dirt road from Rt 9 so make sure you have everything you need. Primitive camping. Just a couple outhouses there. It's on a beautiful lake. Eagles abound when we were there. Generators ok.

$5 per day. Fri & Sat $10

We wrote a blog about it.

we had a wonderful stay at Grey Homestead also in Boothbay Harbor. A great lobster pound just down the road.

On the peninsula just east of Freeport, home to LL Bean, you can stay at Wolfe's Neck Oceanfront.

We love Sandy Pines Campground in Kennebunkport, ME. It's a newly redone campground. The owners came from boutique hotels and the campground has a boutique feel. The sites were larger and the campground was very nice. The staff was well trained and very helpful. My wife and I enjoyed our extended stay there two summers ago in our 28 ft Flying Cloud.

We stayed at a brewery that was nice. Only 4 full service sites. Reasonable price, nice plants between sites for privacy. If you’re interested then I can take the time to figure out the name

Cumberland Fairgrounds

You might want to try the Cumberland Fairgrounds. Cumberland is an upscale suburb of Portland, Maine. Fairgrounds are owned and managed by the Cumberland Farmer's Club. It is home to the Cumberland County Fair in September and also the home of many race horses. The campground has electric (30 amp) and water plus a dump station and is located adjacent to the race track where you can view the sulkies exercising. Very quiet, safe and terrific walking and dog walking areas around the facility. Go to their website and contact the campground manager regarding availability.

Solution - sell the Airstream. Buy a class A RV Motorhome. Preferably a Newmar or a Tiffin and use the Class A only commercial parks. You will be happy. They will be happy. All solved. Pat

Chiwonki Campgrounds out of Wiscasset; big trees, beautiful views, very private. The maritime museum in Bath is worth a visit!

We stayed at Wilderness edge campground in Millonocket (several years ago)and loved it. The sites were large. It wasen't overcrowded. Basically you had electricity and water in the woods.

Maine Non-Cheesy Camping

We spent a week at Sunset Point in Harrington Maine. Lovely campground, great trails, owners were nice. We even had lobster delivered to our trailer. We will be back there again!

I for one would be interested. Maybe an area/region as a first pass before a lot of digging.

Much appreciated.

This popped up on my Instagram feed. It looks like an interesting idea. You pay a subscription fee and then get access to vineyards, farms etc. for a night. No hookups. https://harvesthosts.com/host-locations/
Curious to know if anyone has used this service?

From south to north/east along the coast:
Hemlock Grove In Arundel (Kennebunkport address);
Wild Duck Adult Campground & RV Park in Scarborough (where I am now and much of the summer);
Winslow Memorial Park, Freeport;
Shore Hills Campground, Boothbay;
Camden Hills Campground in Rockport;
Mt. Desert Campground in Somesville on Mt. Desert Island, which allows trailers up to 20 feet;
I have camped at all of the above.

Schoodic Campground, which is part of Acadia National Park but in the part of Acadia N P on the next peninsula east of Mount Desert Island.
Other national park campgrounds on Mount Desert Island.
There are lots of Maine State Park campgrounds that are all great.

FYI Kim there are some Harvest Hosts threads:

https://www.google.com/search?q=Harv...com&gws_rd=ssl

The reviews seem generally good IMO.

Cheers,

Peter
