Any Secrets...BUG SEASON!!!!
Being a newbie to the RV way of life just wondering what you folks do during the bug season. I have camped a lot in my life but mostly during Deer season. Not too much while the bugs are out and about. Whats the secrets, minus closing the screen door and using off.
Thanks,
Shane

Absorbine Junior for gnats/ no seeums. It comes in a dabber bottle so a dab behind your ears on exposed area "within reason" I put it on my cap rather than ears or face.
Dryer sheets (BOUNCE) wipe effected areas, and carry in pocket of shorts or pants. I have tried other brands, but not as good,

Most of our camping is mountain camping so bugs usually aren't a big deal. Still though there is an occasional mosquito or house fly. When they are around we;
- Keep the screen door closed
- Light a couple of citronella candles if necessary.
The candles are somewhat helpful but they're great at masking the stink of some of our camping buddies.

These soap bars work well against mosquitoes and noseeums (the absolute worst). You can wash your hair in it, too, although texture is not delightful it keeps them off your scalp.

I lived in the Adirondacks for a few years. As beautiful as it is you pay for it in black fly season. You can take your arm and punch a whole in a cloud of black flies.
I recommend Aqua Velva. The technique is you espouse the effiectiveness of this product to your buddy and after he is doused and a black fly cloud has encircled you casually stroll by him and Voila! you are black fly free.
Another approach that does work if you are not too crazy about the chemical DEET is Avon Skin So Soft.
Bugs are attracted to the color blue. Mythbusters?
A local swore by a concoction called Swizzle. I think it had vinegar and honey. You drink it. He also took a lot of B vitamins. He did seem to get bit less than me in the woods.
Old Woodsman with pine tar works pretty good and makes you smell like you have been in the woods for a year or two. If you also don't like people I recommend this product. Also has DEET.

Would rather have the bugs than the chemicals on me. Many cosmetics attract bugs, bathe with scentless soap. Mosquitos are especially active around sunset, love the heat and light of campfires, gas lanterns, and mosquito zappers. Keep outdoor light to a minimum. A long sleeve shirt, long pants in the evening are great protection. Flies like open food, keep it covered. Camp away from brush, keep a clean campsite. Most bugs are seasonal, flies in late summer, mosquitos mid to late summer, winter none.

The worst bug attack I experienced was in canyon country on the Green River in Utah. Camping was limited to the bottoms in river bends to get to them you had to go through salt cedar lining the river. Mosquitos call the salt cedar aka tamarisk home by the millions. No other option except go through em, get your tent up asap and stay there. The morning was the process in reverse. Throw everything in your boat as fast as you can and push off. Then the little flying vampires follow you down the river. Adirondack black flies are a close second though

They happen to buy it by the case for the guys who work out there. It smells alot better than off and you don't feel like someone has poured a bucket of oil on top of you like with skin so soft! I was a softball/baseball coach and by the end of the season all of my team and the parents in the stands all smelled like Amber Romance. We have bottles in each car and a couple in the camper too.

We tried Avon Skin So Soft, and it didn't work on Yellowstone mosquitos. Off with Deet was the only thing that slowed the little critters down; that and keeping covered up. Hooded sweat shirts worked the best, with long sleeves, long enough to pull your hands up inside. It was painful watching all the tourists at Old Faithful at dusk getting eaten up, sitting, waiting for the next eruption. T-shirts, walking shorts and no insect repellant made people look like slabs of fly-covered meat hanging in a open air market. They must have spent the next couple of days covered in calamine lotion in their hotel rooms.
Fortunately, the weather was cool enough to wear sweat shirts...

Clothing color will attract mosquitos. They like black and red most, khaki and white least.
If you are grilling meat in the evening, keep it in the fridge until it goes on the grill. The blood-thirsty little buggers like that scent as well.

For when anti-bug agents don't work, a dab of tea tree oil stops the itching. It is tiny, stashes anywhere and smells only slightly antiseptic.

I find that the best way to deal with mosquitos is to shoot a little biodegradable dish washing soap in any standing water around your site. It breaks the surface tension of the water and is a double whammy to the vermin. The adults that try to land on the surface to lay eggs go under and drown. The little wigglers (mosquito larvae) can't climb onto the surface of the water to to take the first flight and hunt for your blood, so they drown to. Within two days you will find that almost every mosquito is gone.
