Any recommendations while in Yellowstone?

This is my first message even though we have owned our Airstream for almost 2 years. We have only been out in our AS 3 times (less than 10 days total) and still feel like Newbies.

We are planning a two week vacation in mid-August to Yellowstone and while my husband has already made campsite reservations, I wanted to know if anyone had any tips of what we should see during our stay.

We are also going to the Grand Tetons.
Any information would be appreciated (sites, clothing tips, RV accessories, etc).

First off, welcome to the Forums. We're glad to have you with us.

We have been to Yellowstone several times. The whole park is one giant scenic view with abundant wildlife viewing opportunities.

Cody, Wyoming, is not far from the East Gate of Yellowstone. It's worth seeing.

Grand Teton National Park is also very worth seeing while in that area

Welcome. We LOVED the wildlife expeditions done by the Teton Science School. A little pricey, but the guides are highly educated, very knowledgeable and gave us a wonderful adventure. They take you out in a safari type vehicle, have high powered binoculars and tripods, etc. Saw moose, elk, a black bear and a black wolf---plus lots of bison, of course. Travel safe.

I second the Coulter Bay recommendation. We stayed in the log cabins there several years ago and it was wonderful.

I also highly recommend a raft trip on the Snake River. I've done it twice and each was fantastic. Not the whitewater but the scenic trip. We used Barker-Ewing raft company. Take the last trip of the day. It starts at Moose Junction, they take you up river by bus and you float back to your car. By going late, you will see more wildlife and get to watch the sun go down over the Teton's. You may want to call a day or two ahead to reserve the evening trip. Well worth it. It is a gentle ride, no spash, so you can take cameras without risk of water damage.

West Yellowstone is a neat town. Lot's of outdoor type shops. The bike shop there rents bikes, and it if fun to ride around town for a couple of hours or take some of the gentle trails just out of town. They are cross country ski trails in winter, so not very technical but still in the "wild".

It does get chilly at night up there even in July.

A 19' Safari SE will fit into the Signal Mountain camp ground in GTNP. No reservations and only 1 full hook-up site. It is first come first served. They usually fill up by early afternoon. The view of the Grand Tetons with Jackson Lake in the forground is worth the trip!

19' is also good for Pebble Creek in Yellowstone.

While taking in the sights around Grand Tetons, take the ferry ride across Jenny Lake. It is a nice boat ride and there is a medium effort trail to an elevated outcropping for a wonderful view across the lake. Also, the Jenny Lake Lodge is a wonderful place and they serve wonderful fare. Another point of interest if you a photographer, is Oxbow Bend just north of the Moran Junction entrance to GTNP. We were fortunate to have a moose leisurely grazing about 15 feet from us for about 20 minutes before he headed back across the river to join his mate.

Sneak off into Pelican Valley (hiking) just after the crack of dawn in the morning. The trail head is just several miles east of Fishing Bridge. That's one of the better places to see wildlife in the park, but to do so it's always best to leave real early, or plan on staying late.

Another easy hike is to take the trailhead at Glacier Rock, on the west side of the Lower Falls on the Yellowstone. You can hike a short distance along the canyon rim, and then take the trail down into the canyon. That's a good way to get away from most other Californians who stick to seeing the Park from the roadside, and invariably tie up traffic by stopping on the asphalt at the sight of everything moving on 4 legs.

About mid-way, the trail forks and continues on to Mount Washburn, a bit farther to the north. That trail's a great way to really see the park as few other Airstreamer's see it. Make sure to take a bottle or two of drinking water with you though if you plan to take both hikes on the same day.
