Anniversary Trip

The wife and I are leaving the kids at Nanna's and taking a trip, just the two of us, for our 20th Anniversary. We are thinking of either the Savannah GA area, Charleston SC or the Blackhills of SD.

Anyone with any suggestions?

Charleston and Savannah are beautiful..long limber live oaks and Spanish moss majestically dot the rivers and roadsides. If you are a history buff, these cities are busting with historic homes and buildings along w battlefields and plantations to visit. If you enjoy the beach, both areas have islands with wonderful beaches nearby. If you have enough time, Beaufort is also very quaint and all three cities have wonderful waterfront parks along the rivers. Filled with historic homes, its charm has made it into many movies as have Savannah and Charleston. The seafood abounds everywhere you go and restaurants are plenty to choose from. The beauty of the Low Country should not be missed.

Yes, avoid the south in the summer. The Black Hills are wonderful and then head on over to Devil's Tower.

Claybrook, we have been to both areas many times. Had a fixed place near Charleston for a number of years. IF you are going in the summer, my choice would be Black Hills. That said by all means AVOID the Black Hills the first full week in August, the full week prior and the full week after - Sturgis Bike Week. We have also been there many times and as a biker it was great, as a camper on holiday it's a nightmare. Everything is more expensive, campsites are hard to find and all venues are packed with bikers. Everyone or almost everyone is nice and polite - but it's up to 500,000 people riding around on motorcycles. Many campgrounds become party central.

I would plan on sometime after August 15 if you decide to go there. It's great time of year. Cool evenings and warm days (usually).

The Charleston and Savannah area in the summer are hot and humid, you don't know humid until you've been to the Low Country in the summer.

Enjoy and Happy Anniversary. We plan on celebrating our 47th on our way to Glacier and West Coast this year.

Thanks for the responses! We are planning to go the first week of June. We are also now also considering the Santa Fe area.

Don't know about temps in Santa Fe in June, be sure to check.

The Black Hills would be beautiful, and June wouldn't be as busy as July and August.

Could run into some leftover snow, tho.

Sante Fe could have snow in the shadows, Taos will still have some snow. But the brilliant sunshine of Sante Fe will negate any concerns of snow you see. One of my favorite places. Hired a consultant for our company once and they had offices in Ann Arbor and Sante Fe. I went to Sante Fe and my President went to Ann Arbor. Seemed fair to me.

Any recommended campgrounds in the Blackhills and Santa Fe? I think we've narrowed it down to those two areas.

In the summer the city park in Spearfish is turned into a campground and is an easy walk to downtown. It is nice with showers and some sites with hookups. I have also stayed at the KOA in Spearfish also within walking distance of restaurants. Outside town are forest service campgrounds which are more remote and more primitive.

AS D Green said the City of Spearfish operates a campground, it's adjacent to an historic fish hatchery and a foot bike path that runs into town and out into Spearfish Canyon. We stayed there for a week this past fall and loved it. Been there prior but always in a rush, now retired and just enjoyed it. Spearfish creek runs down next to the bike and walk path. If you stay down by Mt Rushmore, the Mt Rushmore KOA is a KOA Resort, nice place but very busy. We had a spot by one of the pools, very noisy but by 8:30 at night all was quite. KOA in Custer is nice and quite. Several parks within Custer State Park are also nice and quite down at night as well.

You don't say how many days/weeks you have for this celebration. Looks like you have minimum two days of hard driving to Santa Fe, but it would be a shame to miss all the fun points of interest along the Route 66/I-40 corridor. We did it last (end of) June in three days and felt like we should have taken twice as long. You plan to stop at a nice state park and you find that getting in at 5-6pm and leaving a 8am doesn't give you any time to experience the layover. Sitting in the truck, hour-after-hour, mile-after-mile, is not my idea of a quality anniversary getaway.

I second Spearfish Canyon "run". We used to ride this on our Harley going one way, turn around and go back the opposite direction and then do it again and stop at a little general store at the far end from Spearfish and grab something to drink. Now the state has build a nice little picnic area along the canyon right on the rivers edge.
