Evidently wasn't wadin, only on bank. Everyone who lives in Fl knows you don't let children or pets near the banks of lakes, etc. a terrible tragedy, but common sense is involved here. If no swimming signs are there that means it is dangerous area. My heart goes out to the family.

I think the family of the child at Disney were from Nebraska. They probably had little knowledge of how dangerous alligators can be; especially for small children and pets. What a horror story. May God bless the soul of the little one. I hope the parents can eventually find peace.

Now, for another animal story. Many years ago we were tent camping in the Cherokee National Forest. It was dark, and four of us were sitting around the camp fire in folding chairs. A group of four skunks appeared in our circle. A couple of them even strolled under our chairs. They were smelling around looking for food. If any of us made the slightest move they would stop, look over their shoulder, and raise their tails. The threat was enough to keep us petrified. After what seemed like hours the moved on into the darkness. We still didn't move for a few minutes.

Watching the news at the tire place, the sheriff reports the child was wading in the water...essentially directly communicating to the gator "I am food!"

I feel terrible for the family, and everyone touched by this, but these kinds of things are completely preventable. Having been down there myself, gator precautions are everywhere.

The world is not a Disney movie. These animals are real.

Speaking of poor judgment with regard to wild animals....I read the other day that the couple that picked up the baby bison were fined $700+ for that bit of foolishness, which caused that baby to be euthanized.

Appropriate, in my opinion.

Unfortunately common sense is disappearing and being replaced with a feeling of entitlement to do whatever one pleases. A terrible tragedy, totally preventable.

On a brighter note, we were camping outside of Silverton, Colorado last summer and were on our way up a rocky shelf road to Animas Forks when suddenly my husband noticed some movement across our windshield. Pulling over in the only wide spot on the road, we discovered that a chipmunk had been warming itself in the engine compartment that cold morning and decided to make a showing at a most inopportune time. Cute!

A chipmunk got up on one of the front windowsills at home the other day, and was peering inside....til Lily saw it, and nearly went thru the window after it.

Too bad, sad. If you're in an area with wild animals, Florida, national parks, etc, why would you be surprised if there is an encounter with one?

Our best animal story.

Hi, One day we were driving on a country road in Montana. As we rounded the bend in the road, we had to stop because there were about three or four cows in the street. Right after we stopped. a pick-up truck pulled around in front of us and blocked the street. Two cowboys got out of the truck and one of them whistled. Next thing that we saw was a Border Collie that jumped out of the bed of the truck. The Border Collie headed toward the cows. Then the unbelievable part happened; The cows were so afraid of the Border Collie that they all jumped over a barbed wire fence that was about four feet high. I didn't know that cows could jump, but then we saw it with our own eyes.

One of them jumped over the moon, so a fence should be easy. Good story.

Live Bear Cam

My daughter sent this link to me, and it is pretty darn cool to be able to watch the bears catching fish and engaged in other bear activities...live!

Years ago, I became near obsessed with a live web cam in a bear den in Northern Minnesota, and watching a mama bear named Lily care for her newborn cub, Hope.

My Lily was named for that mama bear.

I was going to post this last night, but there were two bears...ummm...involved...for a very long time, and it just didn't seem appropriate that that would be the first thing one saw when opening up the web cam.
