Angel Fire, NM - best route into town?

This fall, we'll be getting a late start bringing the Airstream home from Colorado to Houston - late September into early October.

Weather permitting, we're considering stopping in Great Sand Dunes, then going on the next day to Angel Fire, NM. There appears to be two route options to get to Angel Fire from 'the Dunes'.
  1. Coming down 522, turn left at Questa onto 38, go through Red River and Eagles Nest, then into Angel Fire. This seems to be the most scenic route, but perhaps a bit more terrifying for my Tin Fairy.
  2. Stay on 522 into Taos, then turn east onto 64. This seems less scenic, and except for the last section before Angel Fire, less difficult.
Does anybody have any experience with either route? I know this is a popular rally site. Which would you recommend (weather conditions aside) - and remember, you will have the Tin Fairy's undying gratitude if you choose correctly... or at least I will!

Thanks.

You're right, the route through Taos is the best route. Just as scenic, but scenic in a different way.

Either way, you have to cross a pass, but Bobcat Pass (between Red River and Eagle Nest) is be a bit of a pull. Palo Flechado Pass (between Angel Fire and Taos) is twistier, but thankfully fairly short.

When you go through Taos, a good idea is to avoid trying to turn right at the plaza, where highway leads you. Rather, just drive straight through the plaza, go on past Walmart to the bypass (585), then come around. It takes you right back to 64, but without the congestion of trying to turn at the plaza.

How late in September are you planning to go this route?

Ok, if you're planning to stay at Monte Verde RV Park in Angel Fire, keep in touch. We're planning to go to Balloon Fiesta with 4CU, departing for back here on the morning of Oct. 4th. That'll put us back here mid-afternoon or so on that day.

Last summer, we came to Angel Fire through Taos after the Rocky Mountain VAC rally. Great to finally meet Lynn and Maria.

In our case, it's a pretty legit question. There are five routes into the area. Two go over passes and very twisty roads; the third goes over just a bunch of twisty roads. And the last two, both from the south, will make you regret the trip even if you make it through towing the rig. (Alas, a number of the GPS programs don't indicate that there might be a problem with those last two.)

from a list of thread tittles, the logic of it kind of popped. Surely you can find the humor in this...

This trip is back on track... depending on work schedules, we will be coming into Angel Fire either Monday Oct 3 (leaving 4th) or Sunday Oct 2 (leaving 3rd).
Lynn, I guess we'll miss you, but look forward to staying in Angel Fire.

If the weather is good, I think we'll go through Red River/Eagles Nest
