Actually, that would be Helen, GA. It is very beautiful from a landscaping stand point, but probably hasn't grown much since the last time you were there.

As an architect, I think the architecture is very much "card board cut-out and applied to standard buildings" looking. It is beautiful and worth a trip if you are in the area. There is a WBCCI Airstream Park in the area so you could get an inexpensive campground, though.

A Few More Places

Visit Burke's Garden in Virginia, the highest valley in Virginia being 5 miles wide and 10 miles long. It encompasses 27,000 acres and is known as God's Thumbprint. It is totally surrounded by the Garden Mountain and is some of the most fertile soil in Virginia.

Another beautiful view is Stone Mountain in Stone Mountain State Park, and to be sure, this is in North Carolina.

Smile What a super list!

Forgive me if I'm duplicating. I want to be sure to mention Bryce Canyon Utah. Its so true as so many folks have noted how lucky we are to live in such a diverse and beautiful country! Even in my home state, which I tend to take for granted, I am constantly amazed at the lovely new sights each camping trip reveals. I can't wait to visit some of the lovely venues you all have recommended. Please be sure to post campground reviews here too, we have benefitted from forum members' reviews many times.

My big problem is that I too take for granted the beauty around me in that when I think of taking my boys to see the spendor of this country I immediately think out west because it is exotic compared to the "everyday" beauty that surrounds me on the east coast.

We have beautiful lush mountains from north Georgia to Maine. We have beautiful vistas in the central plains, lower south, and mid-west. But when I think of something I can show them that isn't right outside my front door, figuratively speaking, I think of places like Bryce Canyon, The Grand Canyon, The Rockies, Yellowstone, The Tetons, Mt. Rushmore, The Redwood Forest, Yosemite, the painted dessert or the south west, the high plains desserts, and the list really can go on and on.

My quandry is that for the most part, I am limited to a couple of weeks a year away from my job at a time and being on the east coast, it takes a week to get to many of these places with an Airstream in tow and a week to get back so there isn't a lot of time to see some of these places once we get there.

For example, I'd love to camp our way to the Grand Canyon, take the mule train into the canyon, visit the South Rim, go to the Hoover Dam, visit Las Vegas while we are so close, and maybe Palm Springs or Death Valley or other places in Southern California. But it would take more than a week to see all of these places once we get there! And that doesn't include the things like Yosemite, the Sequayas, San Fansisco, Napa Valley, and a ton of other sites on the West Coast...and we mustn't forget Disneyland. (I know this thread isn't supposed to be about such, but remember we are Disney fanatics!).

So much beauty, so little vacation time. (Actually, I get more than two weeks/year, it is just next to impossible to be away from my projects that long at one time.)

Oooh! Oooh!!

Not only have we seen the Salt Flats, our trailer belly pan tore loose and then we ran out of gas on it, towing it home from the P.O.!! We can check that one off the list. That's still a good story to tell...here's a picture. Note to self: gas up to full when the winds are 80 mph.
