Along I-50, the "Loneliest Road" from Indiana through Kansas and the Santa Fe trail

We'll begin a trip along US 50 in the Fall, from Indiana west. Eventually we'll end up in Albuquerque for the Balloon Fiesta rally.

Do readers have any suggestions for great campgrounds, historical and unusual sights, natural areas, and side trips? Thanks!

That will be a nice trip, especially in the Fall. Vincennes IN has the George Rogers Clark Memorial; a very small but interesting National Park. Passing through St. Louis, stop by Budweiser, a fun brewery tour. Catch a ball game. Kansas City; go downtown for some BBQ and take in a Blues Club.....( often together ) . The City Market is good also. Dodge City is a bit touristy, but if you like Western culture, it's worth a look. In the Western States, keep an eye on your fuel supply, it can be spotty after dark.

We're in Kansas City, so kind of in the middle of it all. If you will be in the Kansas City metro there aren't a lot of campgrounds, except a bit north of the metro is a lovely one on the Missouri river bluffs, called Weston Bend state park. Will need reservations during the weekends, as it is not a big place. Quite lovely and the town of Weston has a cute little downtown and good restaurants. It's about 15 minutes from the KC metro right off interstate I-29

Once you are past here, one of our favorite campgrounds is a corps of engineer campground called The Outlet at Melvern Lake--on I35 between Ottawa KS and Emporia KS. Campground closes late October.

And if you want to do a nice little hike for an hour or so and maybe see one of the 2 free range herd of American Bison in the lower 48 states, the Tallgrass National Wildlife preserve is just west of Emporia KS. Besides hiking there is a 3 story barn built from Kansas limestone and some info about the flint hills and the tall grass habitat.

A road fan will notice that around Vincennes IN and into Illinois, US 50 is a freeway. Shortly, it turns into a two lane road, on a very wide right of way. The old road is a frontage road, broken up by missing and closed bridges. At Carlisle IL is an old suspension bridge open to pedestrians. As you leave Carlisle you will again see new, never used highway overpasses next to the road, and the underpasses are wide enough for a freeway. I 64 was originally planned along this path, but was moved to the current, more southerly route when Lake Carlisle was built by the Army Corps of Engineers.

Loneliest Road????

I think there is only one stretch of U.S-50 that holds the title of the "Loneliest Road" in the U.S.A. That is between Ely Nevada and Fallen Nevada. Not even close to New Mexico. I am sure Nevada is proud of that title. If you do try that route, be prepared too, not only enjoy the trip but have plenty of fuel, food and water. Pick up a trip map and foam at either end and then you can have it validated in each town to prove you went the distance.

HW 50 coming West has a lot of significant towns along the way and each one has a museum, historic building, event or park worth taking a look. Hutchinson has salt mines to see and Dodge City has Booth Hill to check out. And if you are hot and need a cool down, Garden City has the Big Pool.

Good luck with your trip. Pat

Correct and it is or was a decade ago.

Thanks for the tips, everyone. Feedlots we're not fond of! But quirky little places, yes. We will be getting off US50 to go south before Nevada, so I guess the "loneliest road" was a misnomer from me.

Keep the ideas coming.
