Smile Albuquerque NM to Crater Lake OR and on to camp the coast

Hello.
We are wondering what the best route will be for us as we get ready to head out to the coast.

Anyone have information on the camp sites along the way or around Crater Lake?

We want to camp on the Oregon Coast as well.

Thanks to all

"Best route" varies for different tastes. Rushing to a destination or savoring the journey? We avoid interstates and pick roads less travelled. Scenic byways where available. A current Rand McNally Atlas book, Google Maps and ALLSTAYS Camp & RV on the iPad or phone informs us of routing options and camping info as we go.

We head that way once or twice per year from Durango. Love Hwy 50 across NV for a southerly route, then north. Try Hickson Petroglyphs Rec Area CG in the middle of Hwy 50 for isolation and dark skies. Great Basin NP, Lava Beds NM, Klamath Falls and Oregon Caves NM are very worthwhile stopovers. The Oregon coast is fantastic with great state parks. You've whet my appetite - we head out for WA in two weeks and will definitely take a crooked path.

Safe Travels,

Concur with route 50 in Nevada!

This map shows you most interesting and remote way to get to Crater Lake, with three small deviations. The red route will include Mulley Point overlooking the Goosenecks of the San Juan, Bridges NP, and Capitol Reef.

In west Utah and east Nevada you'll see some awesome dry lake beds, as well as the attractions in the previous post. If you continue on it north of Fernley up to Pyramid Lake, you'll eventually pass Black Rock City (Burning Man) and then a surprising lake north of there that is perfect for an overnight and some kayaking.

You want to end up at Oregon State Park "Sunset Beach" just west of Coos Bay. Don't miss the botanical gardens 1/2 mile south on the coast and especially the cove on the south side of the gardens. Spectacular, best little spot on the ocean, ever. Then drive 20 miles south to Bandon to see Face Rock and all the other beach spires, but keep the trailer at Sunset Beach.

The first blue detour takes you over to Page and Lone Rock campground at Lake Powell, also Zion if you want to go through the tunnel, or detour around Zion by heading south from Kanab.

The second blue detour goes through Susanville and over to Mt Shasta. If you take the green sub-detour, you go through Aiden, which has my favorite all time country store.

Open the PDF for a more detailed view.

Enjoy, Zep

This post shows the Sunset Beach and Bandon coast in Oregon.

If you take the route that goes past Arches NP, you want to look at item #7 in this post about a proposed rally in the SE Utah area. The photo of the gravel road up the Moki Dugway should tell you everything you need to know. The road is paved above the cliff and below it, so don't let this short stretch of dirt deter you. You should have a trusty tow vehicle, however. You can avoid this by taking 191 north out of Bluff and then west on 95, but you would miss some very cool stuff.

I've attached a PDF of topographic detail of the Goosenecks area.

Ditto on the Dugway. Halfway to the Dugway from the south you will pass a sign saying something like trailers not advised, but It was no problem with a dry road. What you have to worry about more is if the guy going the other way is watching the road and not the scenery.

There are 2 campgrounds at Crater. When I went there 4th of July a couple of years ago. They just got the road plowed the day before and only one campground was open. With the melting snow the mosquitos were fierce.
