I'm heading to Alaska, too, in June 2011. Doing a solo trip! Plan to stay on the major highways, exception is Calgary to Jasper--Icefield Parkway!

Made that trip in 02,June-Mid Oct. Loved it. Take a down day at Laird Hot springs, small campground there, we did not and regret it. If you go to Hyder stop at the Glacier Inn and get Hyderized, bar walls are covered with thousands of dollar bills, quite a story. Enjoy every mile, there are a lot of them. Have a safe trip,Cheers at every stop.

The Anchorage Market on Saturdays and Sundays May 14th to Sept ll, has fresh produce and Alaskan souvenirs (300 vendors). Is an outdoors event set up in the heart of downtown (www.anchoragemarkets.com/main.html). We found that Alaskans craft items during the winter to be sold here. Treasures can be found like foscilized reindeer antler neckases, etc. Also good food i.e. salmon quesidilla, etc.

The salmon bake in Fairbanks at Pioneer Park is super, not only good Salmon but fried Halibut, also have Steaks. It wil be the best meal you eat in Alaska IMHO. Also already mentioned, but the best museum in Alaska is the U. of Alaska museum in Fairbanks, not to be missed.

Iditerod Dog Sled headquarters in Wascilla is very interesting.

Take a plane ride out of Talkeetna and land on a glacier at the food of Danali, base camp where climbers begin their ascent. Only done if the weather and visibility are good. It will be an event you wont forget. You can book your flight same day the weather looks good-plenty of fixed base operators listed in "Milepost" I was one of 6 pax in a l950s radial engine Beaver.
,
Eat lunch in the Hot Spot in Downtown Anchorage, best Halibut sandwich for the money. Only seats about 10 people, lunch counter environment.

Eat at the Lucky Wishbone in Anchorage. Run by a retired Air Force pilot. Good food, reasonable prices, a platoon of Waitresses. Great milkshakes and their gizzard basket is super. Fresh chicken flown in daily.

Your going to love it. Hope this helps, Pat

to correct typos above. The restaurant referred to above should read "White Spot" and the plane ride to base camp at the "foot" of Denali.

Sorry everyone

There is a restaurant called the Hot Spot. It's on the Dalton Hwy a couple of miles past the Yukon R. bridge. The limited menu and rustic dining features insults at no extra cost, but the food is good.

If you time it right this is a great place to have breakfast or lunch. Fresh baked bread for sale also.
On your right going North at mile 456 I believe.

The area around Muncho lake to Toad River had the highest gas prices on the Alaska Hwy. in 2010. Fill up before you get near and carry extra gas.

CrawfordGene:
When you do this trip, I think you have to forget about cost and just enjoy the adventure. Some of these stops will produce great stories.
When we stopped here and Double G's for lunch and a couple loaves of bread in end of July 2008, a big bear came around the sealed garbage cans and right up to the restaurant door, sniffing all the good smells.
If the service is still the same, bacon and eggs included about 1/4# bacon, sliced potatoes and toast cut 1" thick. I was full and ready for a nap.
Can't post any pictures as they are on my old laptop.
We met here a couple that had also been at GERTIES in Dawson City and recognized me after seeing me performing with the dance girls on stage. (not my idea! You had to be there)

Did someone mention Muncho Lake?

I agree about fuel costs; it's just part of the experience. Just be sure to fill up before heading to a remote place.

As for Muncho Lake, this is our site at the McDonald CG, part of the Provincial Park. This is about a half hour from Liard Hot Springs (from which we bailed early due to hordes of mosquitoes).

Diamond Tooth Gerties

Dawson City is an entertaining stop-over on your northern expedition.
This CG is downtown and within walking distance of everything in the city. It is in the front center of this shot just over the trees.

GoldRush Campground - Index Page

Reservations may be needed as I believe the music festival is on July 15-17 2011. It gets very busy at this time.
Welcome to the Dawson City Music Festival site

Long - long days in June, July, make for great entertainment on the banks of the Yukon River, and especially in the evenings. Be sure to take your better half with you to Diamond Tooth Gerties so that she will know how that lipstick gets on your cheek.
Great food, music, ENTERTAINMENT, gambling, and of course GIRLS.
Lots of Utube clips, so I won't post my dance shots here!
Something different is always remembered.
Have a great trip.
Dave

Just about every day we were on the Alaska Hwy someone told us about the gas prices in that area being the highest they'd ever seen. No use spending money you don't have to. We bring extra gas just in case we can't find gas or we have to go through an area where prices are extra high. We make sure we have a full tank and gas cans before we enter Canada too.

Any trip to Alaska is expensive and so long as we take our house with us, we can save on dining and lodging but our fuel expenses increase.

We enjoyed the adventure and saved a little from time to time on fuel. They are not mutually exclusive. Glad you enjoyed your breakfast.

Today is a grey, damp, cold, windy day - the perfect day to do a little research on all these suggestions and then plunk the ones we didn't already have listed into our mapping software - the map is starting to light up like a Christmas tree - some real gems here!

Thanks again - this cannot help but be a great trip!
