Alaska, BC, AB, SK, YK next summer. Reservations?

Hi all,

Planning a trip to AK next summer. Traveling with a few other rigs. Not planning to make many reservations. How is it traveling through the Canadian provinces and AK finding on-the-fly sites? Anticipate provincial and state parks preferentially. I suspect during the week isn't too bad, but like everywhere else the weekends may fill up. Is that the case? Trying not to tie the itinerary down too much with pre-booked reservations except maybe at some key areas like Denali and Kenai Peninsula.

Thanks!
Dave

We used a similar type of approach you talk about when we went through many of the areas you mentioned. Some times we would call ahead for sites in early to mid afternoon. And, yes, weekends need to be planned ahead of time. There were only two rigs in our group. Campgrounds were great to the low side of mediocre !!! We were on the rocks at the campground on Homer Spit ! All part of the wonderful journey. I'm sure you will have a great time. It's a beautiful trip that we hope to do again in the near future.

Hi

If you are talking about a "major" national park in the US or Canada in July / August, the "just show up" process may mean getting to the campground before 8AM (and certainly by 9). That sort of suggests that you already are there, hanging around or that you drove all night and will sleep all day. It's snowing here in Yellowstone and the campgrounds still are filling up early morning (and it's mid-week).
