Alabama Corps Parks & State Parks
Want to explore Alabama this April & May. Have stayed in the Corps of Engineer Parks on the Georgia border, Caloosahatchee.
Want to start in the SE corner and wind up in Chattanooga.
Any info on the parks south to north along the eastern side?

Hey David,
Last year ( end of March) we stayed at Gunter Hill COE campground near Montgomery. We found it to be clean and quite pleasant. We'll stay there again this spring on our trip to the Gulf coast.

Make sure hav a current list of still open parks. Alabama had closed several in the last year.

Florala at Se corner closed as state park but I believe is now a city park. I recommend Cheaha, Chewakla, guntersville, and Desoto state parks. I haven't stayed at windcreek but hear it is nice. There is also nice city park in Greenville, Al. Desoto Caverns, which is private, is a fun kitschy tourist attraction with campground.

Not so much on the eastern side. I've stayed at Isaac Creek Park, a CoE on Lake Claiborne northwest of Monroeville. A long way off from civilization (about 27 miles to town), but very scenic. I'll be going back with my new folding kayak because the sites on the east side have semi-private boat docks in Isaac Creek itself (one dock per three sites) as well as about 95% tree cover. The sites on the west side are more open but have nice lakefront views.
There are several CoE campgrounds located on West Point Lake right on the Georgia border, but I haven't stayed at any of them yet. Check out the Corps Lakes Gateway for information… http://corpslakes.usace.army.mil/vis...cfm?Id=K519710
I'll be staying in Meaher State Park in May this year for a rally with my WBCCI Unit. It has very easy access to the USS Alabama battleship since it's right on Battleship Parkway, though across the bay in Spanish Fort.
Monte Sano State Park near Huntsville is also nice, and conveniently located within an easy drive of the US Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville.

Space and Rocket is very worth a visit. Take the tour to Marshal Space Flight Center and the historical sites on Redstone Arsenal. Lived in the area 14 years, still have family there.
Do keep in mind that the mosquito is the state bird in warm weather. 😄😄😄

I should have mentioned there are also a couple of nice campgrounds in the Conecuh National Forest campground which is east of Brewton, Al. Open Pond is the main one. It is $12 a night and many sites are lake front.

Alabama Parks
Gulf State Park (south of Mobile) on the coast is very nice. You might want to check to see if a reservation is needed. Very nice white sand beach with hardly anyone on it in April.

I second Chewacla, and also suggest you go to Cloudland Canyon and Georgia State Park, it is pretty awesome.

Not so much north east but north central just east of Athens we stopped at Joe Wheeler State Park and really liked it: there is a golf course as well if you like that.
