Airstreams and bears

Has anyone experience a bear trying to rip open their Airstream or breaking a window to get at food like they do to cars in search of food?
Trying to figure out level of safety...
thanks!!

Just my opinion, but, I think that intrusion is much less likely in an Airstream vs SOB! I travel solo, (senior lady), and when locked up in my AIRSTREAM INTERSTATE, I feel safe.

An Airstream isn't bear proof. But it is so much better than a tent. Don't be offended, but generally speaking bears just don't like humans much. They do like hamburgers, and I'm told they can smell one a mile away. So keep food items sealed up. If you leave your door open and hamburgers on the table, some bear may just help himself.

There was a young woman on here several years ago that had a bear tear out the rear window of her small trailer...she ran out the front, her dogs chased it off.

Anything could happen.

Apparently, bears, and lions, no longer need to actually rip things open. They use the door handle instead...

We saw two about 1/4 mile from an Airstream campground last week.

I live in an area where bears frequently pass through my yard. And yes they have been known to break into cars for a little bit of a cracker - most common in early spring when they have just gotten out of bed and are hungry or late fall when they are fattening up to go to sleep for the winter.

After 20 years here they have not once attempted to get into any of the trailers that are in the driveway although I do leave dry food in them through out the spring and summer and fall months. I do know of a party in the area who did have a bear attempt to get into their trailer one evening though.

I think the odds of one attempting to get into a trailer while people are camping in it are pretty low though. If its a black bear the odds are good they will take off fast if you yell at them on first hearing them outside the trailer.

WBCCI Denver members had a bear in their AS. Probably the owner surprising the bear in his shorts in the middle of the night scared it back out the of the trailer.

All of the campgrounds and rv parks that I've frequented this year have been in "bear territory". I like to prepare my "cooked/fried food" on my camp stove outside of the trailer. It is important when cleaning up to put "all cooking" devices" either back in the trailer or TV. I've never had a problem and feel very secure. Can't say the same when I was camping "off my motorcycle"...but that's another story.

I also make it a point to keep "bear spray" in both the trailer and TV. Matter of fact I keep BS in my vehicle at all times....it's a good product for self-defense. Never had to use it but it gives me a "sense of security" just knowing it's there.

Worse yet, I believe it was a cross dressing bear, or maybe he said, "The cross I must bear. In fact he might have said it was a cross-eyed bear.

I can't remember for sure.

You have to learn to defend yourself if you ever meet a bear. Here is a little video of me while I was salmon fishing

Caveat to my former posting....I ALWAYS CARRY BEAR MACE, A MARINE AIRHORN, AND A "little friend" or two when I travel...as well as a 1300 lumen mag light. If that won't scare a "BEAR OR MTN LION" off....I'll just scream really lowd! I can always get in the driver seat and drive away! LOL!

Carol's story was well written and funny despite how serious it was.

It stuck with us along with the you tubes of the car doors being opened by bears and lions.

Haven't seen Carol on here in some time hope she is still camping.

I finally was able to download Carol's story, and WOW! Very scary read! I ended up reading her entire thread, and she certainly lives an interesting life....filled with adventure!

I wonder whatever happened to her... Are you still around, Carol?
