Airstream Travel to help disasters Victims around America

Hey i am setting a goal to buy a airstream in a year or so. I wanna travel the 48 states and work from my airstream full time. I also wanna volunteer with disaster clean up and support for victims. Are there any other groups out there doing this?

Matthew

Due to Matthew, I am anticipating that there will, unfortunately, be the need for volunteers in the south east. Seems like the "boondockability" of our Airstreams is a good fit for providing services. Does anybody know of organizations that organize cleanup or assistance efforts? I will be calling the American Red Cross to see if they do, but would appreciate any other knowledge. As always the greatest need maybe supplies; water, non perishable foods, clothes, blankets.

Look up VOAD. These types of groups took over some relief missions from FEMA during hurricane Sandy.

Just don't self-deploy unless you are a member of one of the rescue/recovery teams.

Unfortunately well-intentions, untrained folk usually end up in need of rescue as well. If you are not trained, or not ordered to deploy, DON'T.

Are you a military person? If so, check out Team Rubicon.

No suggestion in my post about self deploying. I agree that going with training and an organization is optimal. But the fact is most organizations prepare for and triage for "unaffiliated" volunteers. Info below instructing volunteer orgs for that situation. Not sure that well intentioned, properly vetted and assigned individuals will need "rescue". I also agree that just showing up and not attaching with an organization is asking for trouble.

Frankly given the size of this airstream community, I was a little surprised that there isn't more discussion about such altruistic activities. Maybe just my limited search capability.

There are many churches who also have trained disaster relief teams. I'm Seventh Day Adventist and they have ADRA. Start with your local clergy. They can probably connect those who want to help with church members already involved. You can also check with the synod or general conference of various denominations.

As Churchill always put it, "Former Naval Person". Also a ham radio operator involved in emergency communications. I'll look into it.

I agree. One of our reasons for equipping our Airstream with solar power and extensive Ham Radio hardware (hence the name) was to be able to provide emergency on-site communications, both long and short range. At work, I'm known as the dude that sprouts antennas in emergencies. Did a lot of that in Northern Alabama, which is the tail end of Tornado Alley. We got entirely too much practice in real situations....
