Ouch, that's tough to view . . .
There are more photos on the left of the page, including a rear shot showing no luggage carrier or bike racks on the end of the AS. Amazing the truck stayed upright. Wonder what caused the roll-over?
The caption says "left lane blocked." If the pickup and AS are in the left lane, they are pointed in the wrong direction IMO, so did they do a 180 somehow, or maybe entered the divided highway going in the wrong direction? Can't find any news reports.
I-580 northbound, north of Galena Creek Bridge: https://www.google.com/maps/search/g.../data=!3m1!1e3
Were there storms in the area, with maybe high winds coming down that canyon to the left? There is a ski area nearby, suggesting mountains and possibly a weather-related cause? [If you zoom out on the Google satellite view, you can see the mountains.] No skid marks by any of the visible tires.
Thanks for the heads up.

While in Colorado last year (sans tt) we were driving through the mountains that opened up abruptly to a high plains valley we came upon a guy whose 16' utility trailer had simply flipped on its side from the sudden intense cross wind. It was loaded with tools and loaded low to the floor, guy said he felt the smack of the wind and a second later his trailer flipped.
Gives me the willies to this day.
This is the stuff that keeps me up at night. With Mother Nature, you never know...

Thanks.
If a wind gust happens at the same time as the driver is turning a bit, even sightly and for any reason, the combination of the wind and the centrifugal force from the turn, could precipitate a roll-over. Low tire pressure could be another factor. Also, the maximum gust in the graph shown in the earlier post [of about 28 MPH], might not have been the highest wind speed in a micro-burst coming down the valley of the Galena Creek canyon.
It just takes a perfect storm of conditions to roll a trailer.
Travel safe!
Peter
PS -- The Reno airport reported wind gusts of 26-28 MPH late yesterday afternoon also:

No clue. I don't see any WD nor friction control paraphernalia laying around or hanging on the tongue, but the pic is too far away to really tell.

One ton, long wheelbase Cummins diesel tow vehicle. Enough truck? Is there a lesson here?

Not really....everything is conjecture, just like the rest of the accident threads around here.

Actually, in the picture on the left from the rear, you can just make out some WD parts on the side of the tongue. But it's strange to see no bars or anything, maybe they cleaned up?
Image uploading isn't cooperating this morning...

The last accident that was posted on the forums showed an expedition upright with the camper on its side - your comment there was how the low cog kept the expedition upright likely keeping the accident from being worse than it was. Now we have an accident with a large pickup, upright, with only the camper on its side, and clearly the large tow vehicle is to blame........
Can't have your cake and eat it too.

PS just noticed that the Reno airport link in the earlier PS [Post #5] noted a Thunderstorm in the 16:55 PDT line item yesterday, 11 minutes after the flash flood warning just posted.
Anyone who has an advanced Accuweather account could probably pull up the radar loop from yesterday.
Chances are good that a real intense squall line came down from the mountains, which would have been hard to avoid.

Equalizer hitch. You can tell by looking at the bracket on the A-Frame.
If you look carefully (at the larger photo vs. the crop) you can see that there is still at least one spring bar attached to the hitch head. they likely pulled out of the brackets due to a harsh angle / jackknife.
That truck is pointed in the wrong direction... so looks like a 180 degree spin....

Sharp observation!
But that proves as much as a Ram 3500 diesel. For all we know he was sideswiped by a truck.

Totally agree. Just an observation. I run an equalizer hitch so I noticed it... Whatever happened must have been pretty scary if you were along for the ride!

Clearly nobody is invincible. Sunny nice day, dry pavement, etc. etc. who knows what happened (I watched a youtube dash-cam video the other day of someone towing a boat who got side swiped due to road rage - and lost control of the rig).
Good reminder for all to be safe out there regardless of your particular setup! Wear your seatbelt!

Thanks for the photos and analysis. 180 spin was my guess in Post #2.

Not sure about your weather though . . .

Have you checked the weather data in Post #3 and following? A fast squall line with intense wind, and not much rain, could easily have spun the rig IMO. Moisture on the road would have dried by the time the state troopers or DOT took the photos.
Thanks again for the hitch feedback.
Peter
PS -- And ditto to this good advice!
