airstream accident - fire on oregon I-5?
a friend just told me about seeing an accident last night on I-5, south of eugene, or., involving an airstream that was on fire. i can't find any info about it...we are an icy mess here in the n.w., and hate to hear any news like that. anybody know anything about the accident? if i find out anything, i'll update here

Doesn't look like an Airstream to me...maybe an Avion? I could be wrong, but the windows don't look like Airstream's...

What a picture! At least it looks like the fire was limited to the tow vehicle. You can bet they kept the propane tanks cool but I'd think the rockguard and front clearcoat would be damaged from the heat.

That's an Avion trailer. It's too bad, no matter what brand it is, looks like damage to the trailer itself was minimal.

Text from Register-Guard, Eugene, OR: A Goshen firefighter knocks down a fire that threatens to engulf a panel truck and trailer in the southbound lanes of Interstate 5 north of Creswell. A delivery van packed with flea market goods burned furiously when friction from the rear tires against the truck body ignited a fire as a Washington state man drove south on I-5 at 2:15 p.m. Thursday, according to a South Lane County Fire & Rescue report. No one was injured. Traffic was delayed while firefighters from Cottage Grove, Creswell and Goshen put out the fire.
Photo caption: A Goshen firefighter sprays a truck that burst into flames near Creswell. Friction from the tires rubbing against the truck's body sparked the blaze.

Overloaded truck full of flea market items on fire. I already see a big problem with this insurance claim.

Shows what happens when you overload a truck with fleas!  Tires don't generally rub on the frame if all is well. Wonder how the nose of the trailer made out?

Yea, it looks like an Avion. When I first read the post subject line, my first thought was Dometic fridge given the current issues with the fridge line that was talked about here on the forums.

Good thing the wind was blowing away from the trailer. Judging by the size of the flames the fire would have destroyed both truck and trailer.

Yea, I hear those Avions use cheap, thin alum sheets...unlike our Airstreams...........
(Of course I'm totally kidding....it would have eaten up an Airstrem just as easy if the wind had been going the other way).
I wonder if the heat did any damage to it.

Not only an overloaded truck but it was probably not set up for this kind of weight on the rear of the truck from towing this size of trailer. Lot of heat built up in driving from Washington. Insurance nightmare.

You have to wonder what he was selling at the flea market, concrete blocks? It would take an awful lot of weight on a truck like that to make the tires rub the body?????

Just have to wonder why he didn't smell it before it caught fire. Burning rubber has a pretty strong smell even with the windows up.

Of course, it's just a guess...
but, having towed in the mountains quite a bit, the burning rubber smell (or brakes) is quite common on long downhills. If they were pushing to make it to the next flea market venue, driving too long/far and maybe not paying attention ( I know, quite an understatement!) or thinking the smell was coming from a trucker...it could happen.
One can only guess at this point ~
