AirDreamers New Journey! Follow us.

Hello!

My wife and I, the AirDreamers, are about to undertake an epic journey! We will be leaving October 5th, 2019, for a seven month trip across the country. We have planned a portion of the journey, but a lot is left up to current circumstances.

Our journey begins in Ohio, 3 hours from the mothership. We won't be stopping as we finished our warranty work several months ago. We plan to head down to Nashville and then Memphis and on to Dallas, Texas. We will be stopping to see the "King's" house at Graceland and quite a few state parks along the way. Hotsprings Nation park is on the agenda!

One of the highlights of the trip will be a one month stay at South Padre Island. Why so special? Elon Musk and SpaceX will be launching the incredible Starship spacecraft, and we are camped 5 miles away! Launched is scheduled for late October and is why we booked all of November! Elon is never on time.

As we travel, I will be reporting signal strength, and bandwidth of our Airstream connect system. I will give you the location and info at the top of each post.

Also, we will be trying out the new solar panels we added to the top of the Airstream. We now have 450 watts of factory solar with 2 Lifeline AGM batteries. If we find an installer along the way, I would like to add lithium batteries and a new converter to the mix. Maybe some suggestions who could do this in the southwest?

We are packing right now for the trip (mostly just clothes as we never take anything out of the trailer when stored) and I have a few mechanical things to check like the ProPride hitch bolts, but we will be on the road soon.

I will have lots of pictures and commentary along the way and maybe even a video or two of exciting things like a space shot! This will be the first time I will be bringing my good camera gear. Canon 5D MIII and lots of good glass. We will have a shared folder on Google for all of the hi-res pictures so if you want an invite to see them, just PM me and I will send you the link. You can leave comments and even post pictures if you like. Welcome aboard the AirShip!

Well, that's it for now. Thanks in advance for coming along.

Tom (turk123)
& Doty!
& Maddie, our dog.

The Porter Zoo in Brownsville is a nice stop while you are on South Padre. I was there a long time ago and we had fun walking across the border to Mexico, but I suspect it’s not as easy as it used to be. Best wishes for safe travels.

ProPride Maintenance

I thought it was time to do some maintenance on the propride. I cleaned and regreased the large bearings that have the grease fittings. Took more grease than I thought. I guess it really needed it. When you grease a bearing like this you want to make sure the old black grease squirts out a bit so it is replaced by the new grease. It is a dirty job but necessary for proper lubrication.

I carry a small grease gun with me on the road that takes the small tubes of grease. I also use marine grease (green) as it has better water-resistant properties than regular grease. Those bearing do get wet!

I had a problem last year with the rear yoke slipping on the proPride and causing lots of wobble down the road. It was all due to the rear frame that holds the yoke had slipped sideways an inch. Once straightened the trailer runs fine. The frame is held on to the A-frame of the trailer with two U-brackets and
four nuts and washers. You need a very deep socket to use on your torque wrench. I had to go buy one. 11/16". I normally use a box wrench but this time I wanted to torque the nuts to 50 lbs. It surprised me that I had to crank at least 1 1/2 turns to get to 50 lbs. over what I had tightened with the box wrench. It's not gonna move now!

Have a super trip! Hot Springs, Arkansas has numerous sites of interest including its National Park. Lake Catherine State Park or Lake Catherine RV Park are good places to camp. Be sure to experience one of the spas, see the Botanical Garden and eat some McLard's barbecue.

Enjoy your travels and keep us informed. As far as lithium battery upgrade goes, just know you'll need more than a battery and a converter swap. You'll also need a lithium compatible DC-DC battery charger if you want to properly isolate & charge batteries from your tow vehicle. Also, you'll need a lithium compatible solar controller and a State of Charge Monitor with shunt.

You can add 200ah of batteries and the rest with Renogy products (if you get them on sale) for about $2700. If you go with Battleborn and Victron, add an additional $1200 on top of that amount. And that's before paying for the install. Ask me how I know.

This is Maddie. She is a Golden Doodle and is 7 years old. She is a wonderful well-behaved dog. She loves to travel and sometimes stays in the back of the truck with the doors open for an hour while we set up camp.

We will be in the Two Rivers Campground on the night of the 6th Oct. We spent a lot of time in Nashville on another trip so we are just passing thru! It's a 320-mile day which is quite long for us. We normally don't travel very fast, but this trip we need to get to Dallas by the 12th. Dog watching and house watching my brother's place for two weeks. He and his wife are off to Paris!

Anyway, we will be there! Late!
