Advice on Traveling the roads to Eagle and Coldfoot Alaska

I am at Dawson Creek ready to travel north tomorrow. I want to take two side trips....rt 5 to Eagle from Top of the World Highway, and rt 2/11 north of Fairbanks to Coldfoot. Would like to hear anyone's experience who has traveled those routes with a travel trailer. If who left your trailer and drove without it, where did you leave it? I am in a 2013, 25' FC.

Thanks, John

2010 is when we were in Alaska. We did the top of the world highway with the trailer. Top of the World highway was fine. Stayed in one of the 2 campgrounds in Chicken. Left the trailer there and went to Eagle on a day trip. Road is gravel and lots of washboarding. Understand it has been washed out and rebuilt since then. As has Eagle itself. Nice trip but rough ride in the 2500. Watched a black bear swim the Yukon a couple of times while we ate. I would not want to beat the trailer up that much. We stayed at a campground on the outskirts of Fairbanks. My wife flew to Coldfoot and rode the bus back. I flew both ways to Beaver, I think it was. We did not want to try the highway even without the trailer.

I would not tow an Airstream to Eagle, unless the road has greatly improved since I was there- -that is unless you plan to camp in Eagle for several days. Check on current road conditions.

The Top of the World Highway was clean, dry and easy when I traveled it, but conditions change daily. Eagle suffered severe flooding damage a few winters ago, so check on that too.

There could be places along the road between the Yukon/Alaska border and Chicken where you can unhitch and drive into Eagle. Otherwise I recommend unhitching and camping in Chicken, then backtrack a little for an all day trip to explore Eagle.

Good luck, travel well to enjoy the adventure.

Thanks for the reply and sorry for the delay. We are now at Whitehorse and have wifi. Found the town visitor centers to be a great info source on highways with regard to condition and construction. Will most likely leave the trailer at Chicken for the trip to Eagle. Have added a side trip up the Dempster Hwy. Again, thanks for the replies.

The truth is that the old pipeline haul road is very boring and the gravel is a killer. The interior of Alaska isn't nearly as scenic as the Denali area. I would spend more time around the coast, Homer, and surrounding area than the Fairbanks north area.
