Advice: Acadia in Aug or ...??

Planning a trip to Acadia NP next year possibly last half of Aug. Part of the thinking is to get out of the mid west heat and humidity for a while.

When is the best time?

We are also considering early Sep after labor day and after school starts thinking it may be less crowded. Good time or too cool that far north?

Finally, any recommendations on things to see and do in the NE as this will be out first trip to that part of the US.

We went after Labor Day a few years ago, with the same thought. It is not less crowded. Seems like all of the retired, non-working people in the country end up there after Labor Day. It is beautiful, nevertheless.
