We are looking for a nice campground on the Gulf (MS, AL, LA) preferrably on the beach with lots of stuff for kids to do not too far away. We are coming from outside of Memphis so we are also looking for a couple of nice ones to stay at on the way down and back. Fall break in two weeks. Thanks, sorry I veered slightly off topic but hey maybe the one y'all suggest will become a favorite.

It's a little bit east, but we have used Topsail (near Santa Rosa Beach) in FL; actually have used it for our Canopener rally in January. It is a FL State Park, although it used to be a private resort. Really nice, close to Fort Walton Beach, many kid activities - and right on the beach.

Mrmossyone, not sure if it's too far out of your way but I definitely suggest Topsail. Great place for families, just take the bikes. I can't say enough about the place. Also, You might like Oak Mtn State Park just south of Birmingham as a halfway stay. We've done that a few times from Knoxville and it's not bad, but Topsail is worth it. I'm from Memphis as well and we used to go down to Gulf State Park, but since the Hurricane, the trees are all gone and it just seems like a big parking lot. No offense GSP fans!

Sherando Lake Campground and SNP (Loft Mountain)

One of our favorite campgrounds is Sherando Lake Campground. It is a US Forest Service CG that is about 4 miles from the Blueridge Parkway (MM 13). Here is a link to the campground map: Picasa Web Albums - Dan - Sherando Lake...
Section A is mostly for tents and there are no hookups. Sites A1-A17 are reservable. Probably only about 8 sites will accomodate smaller trailers (less than 25ft). Our favorite is A30. All the sites are huge with a large flat teraced area, a firepit, large picnic table and lantern holder. Section A are the last to fill up. Section B is on a stream and offers electricity so these sites are the first to fill up. All sites are first come first served. Section C has electricity and all sites are reservable. All sections have new bath houses with hot showers. Elevation is about 1,000 ft, so AC is nice to have in the hottest part of the summer.

Another favorite is Loft Mountain in the Shenandoah National Park. There are lots of deer here, great hiking and the sunsets are fabulous. No hookups but hot showers and laundry facilities are available. Elevation is about 3,000 ft so AC is not mandatory in the summer.

Boondocker, please add these to your list please.

thanks, Dan

I like Cedar Grove CG in Kings Canyon NP,
Costanoa which is actually a KOA north of Santa Cruz, CA, but it doesn't seem like it which is nice.
Princess CG in Sequoia N.P.

And we're still searching for more! This thread is great. I'm adding to my bucket list of places to go.

Upper Michigan - Fayette State Historic Park

Just got back from a color tour of Michigan's Upper Peninsula and one of the most beautiful parks we discovered was Fayette State Historic Park and Historic Village on Big Bay De Noc on Lake Michigan. The Historic Village is the site of one of the earliest Iron Smelting operations on the great lakes. Sun sets on the beach, deer roaming the campgrounds and $16. camping w/elect. and fall colors make this a great spot. Also through in a pic of our little gem in front of the Big Mack bridge.....Tim

Mingus Mountain

One of our favorites in the Hot AZ summer is Mingus Mountain. This is a 7800ft campground on top of the mountain between Prescott Valley, AZ and Jerome AZ on Route 89A

This is our favorite in Arizona. KP Cienega, highest campground in the state at 9740'. Situated between two meadows, one with water, you can see turkey, elk, deer, and if the poachers don't shoot them all, might hear wolf at night. don't try it if your coach is over 25'. Strictly boondocking but it has pit toilets.

You can upload pictures to google maps. Click "more" under options and you can see what users have uploaded near a campground.

VA Coast?

Who can point out some camping areas on the VA coast? I know boondocking is to much to hope for, but lets shoot for non-commercial at least.
