A pictures from recent trip...

We just returned from a few days on the road.

So we left Sunday and set a casual pace heading towards central Oregon and La Pine state park. About the time we arrived the local forest fire crews had closed it due to a nearby fire. Wonderful, time for a fast alternate.

Over to Newberry Caldera and the high lakes we go. We ended up at East Lake. Home of a 22+lb lake trout state record. Being slaves to convience we opted for the "resort" park and its hookups. I never quite imagined "resort" being applied to a camp like this. Stuffed into the lodgepole pines and a very rough dirt/gravel road and camp sites.

The lake is pretty enough, but we werent sticking around long enough to do any fishing.

Woke Sunday morning to a sharp bite in the air. Of course it was almost 6400 feet elevation. A nice 36 degrees. Now for some reason the water heater wouldnt fire up. I went out to take a look at it in a T shirt and shorts but couldnt make heads or tales of it as it wasnt the same water heater shown in the manual. Grr. Off to the complimentary camp showers. Where they allow to compliment them a $1.25 for a 5 min show that took a minute and half to heat up. Wonderful.

That out of the way we hit the road for a day trip. Our route was highway 31 leading into the Oregon Outback, into the rural, sparse and arid SE corner of Oregon.

First stop was Hole in the Ground. A simple sign off the highway points you out into a dirt forest service road. four mile later you come to it.

Next stop, Fort Rock. A very impressive sight, rising out of the desert.

Last stop was Picture Rock pass. About 2/3 of the way down Hwy 31 between La Pine and Lakeview, Oregon. Native American petroglyphs dot the rocks at this mountain pass in the rim rock.

Then it was back to the camp at East Lake. Stopped by the Big Obsidian flow along the way.

.

After that, our dissatisfaction with the "resort" lead us to leave a bit early.

Off to Prineville reservoir we go. Used to go here as a young kid with my family but then didnt for about 20 years. Went back about 2 years ago and was looking forward to returning again.

Here is our camp...

Spent a few great days there then it was time to load up and head home. We were planning a few day trips to the Oregon coast before the mad rush of people hit it over Labor Day weekend.

heading out...

Looks like we are heading up to Clear Lake next month sometime.

Van,

Those are some very beautiful pictures....reminds me that I miss the West very much. Would you mind very much if I saved the picture of the lake? Thanks.

Van,
Great pics.....and I hear ya with the East Lake being primitive......but beautiful (I hear the cabins are fun). We camped at Belknap Hot Springs last weekend and took a day trip up to Clear lake for breakfast. Nice petrified trees in the lake bottom!
We're heading over to the Steens in three weeks to meet with the Idaho Unit and Western Oregon Unit of WBCCI. Should be fun (and expensive with gas prices)!
