A long trip...

We’re headed out tomorrow morning from the coast of Texas to Rhode Island... but that’s not the question...

We figure it’ll take 3 or 4 days easy driving to get there to make a decision on a 34’ slide-out Classic... it’s the drive back that has wonder & question...

We’re wanting to head back avoiding big cities, steep mountains and valleys... taking about a week, 10-days getting back to Rockport, TX from N. Smithfield, RI., hitting some nice campsites and such.

Suggestions, comments, must see’s? GPS is sooo boring!

Hug the shore as you leave, and see some old fishing villages.

Stop and explore the Outer Banks of NC, then continue along the coast through the beautiful Low Country, and to at least St. Augustine before heading west.

You will have spent enough time by then that you may want to get on the major Interstates to head toward home....but it will have been worth it.

i would suggest the route Maggie suggested. State parks, especially on the SC coast are some of the nicest and prettiest in the US and they should not be crowded this time of year. Then into FL there are several SP right on the ocean.

Thanks, Maggie... Some friends told us we had to "do NC... Beautiful state!"... We've been up in New England many times visiting friends and doing the scenery thing... Oh, and the lobster thing, too!

I have a 93 34 foot classic with no slide out. I am curious what years the slide outs were made, what is their price range, and what you think about the coach you are taking a look at. I imagine the slide outs are considerably heavier? Are there any problems they are prone to?

I live in Lincoln, RI which is next to north smithfield. Looks like a very nice Airstream . September has been very warm for us but cooling off this weekend. Go to Trattoria romana in Lincoln if time allows for some great Italian food.

The county and state parks all thru the low country are beautiful, many of them very close to the water if you are a kayaker or canoe-er.

I stayed a week or so this past winter at Blythe Island County Park near Brunswick, GA. Beautiful, marshy location.

Sorry for the delay responding... just got back home from a trip that took about a week longer than anticipated because... just decided to stop here and there to check things out... 4800 miles total. I did purchase the trailer.

Not sure what years they were made (I’ve seen Safari’s with slide-outs, Classic 30’ and the 34’), but I believe they stopped making them in 2011. And yes, the slide-outs do add weight, something around 800+ lbs. on the one I have. The addition of a slide, besides adding weight, can stress the frame if utilized when the trailer is not level. There are sometimes alignment issues (in/out) that can be adjusted. We had a little water trickle down the side of the slide when we brought it in after a rain - nothing a handy towel couldn’t handle. Had similar problem on a Country Coach moho I had on it’s main slide, except it was worse on the CC. My Foretravel didn’t have any leaks as it used a bladder (like a inflatable tube) around the slide - great concept until it sprang a leak...

This is the longest Airstream I’ve had (5 of ‘em) and the only one with a slide. Absolutely love it. The additional space with the slide out is useful when you have pets and visitors. This would make a very nice full-timing trailer (something I wish I would have considered prior to getting the MoHo’s...).

New, this 2008 34’ carried a $110K price tag from Colonial Airstream. The original owner took excellent care of it, which I appreciate greatly! He had a lot of options added (solar, inverter & converter, large fridge, audio-video, etc., etc.). Everything worked well during the trip back home...

Towing wasn’t a problem at all - very stable - seemed more so than the 30’ Classic I had previously. All in all, great trailer and very comfortable.

Slides were made from 2001-2009. A total of 84 units were made with the majority being 30' Classic's , then 34' and some 28's.

Thanks, Pappy. Only 84? The PO told me there only 19 of the 34' Limited w/slideouts made. Thought there had been more all the way around- especially the 30'.

According to Jackson Center, there were a total of 84 sliders made between 2001 and 2009.

Don't know. When I was there back in May, I confirmed that number from info that our Idaho AS dealer told me last fall.
