90 in West Texas
We are planning to head out to visit family in Phoenix once we leave Alumaflamingo in late Feb 2017.
Planning the trip I'm most interested in jumping off I10 in San Antonio and heading to Del Rio. From there taking 90 all the way to Van Horn.
Anyone have insight on that route?

I live about half time "near" Del Rio. (If anything out there is near anything else). The roads are pretty good. The Tax payers of Texas have paid dearly for the speed limit signs and take great pride in them.

It's long and boring to Del Rio from SA. Scenic after that. I'd choose a route down from Junction or Kerrville. See a little of the Hill Country. 377 the Pecos Trail would be my choice.

I agree with Slowmover. See some of the Edwards Plateau. When we go to Garner State Park from Fredericksburg, we take I10 to Mountain Home. Take 41 west, then south on 83. You hit 90 at Uvalde. Nice views, nice roads and you can take a spin thru Old Garner.

We drive from New England to Arizona in the winter and just love 90 in West Texas. We come through Austin, stay a few days, then head south through San Antonio and then west on 90. Hate 10W.
We rush south and west, then really feel like we begin our trip west of San Antonio. After that, we aren't in a rush and really enjoy the small towns, state parks and Big Bend coming through 90W. We especially enjoy Seminole Canyon SP.
Watch out in Van Horn for the Southern Star RV Park. Lots of incoming workers are taking up spots and -- we hear through the grapevine -- are making more noise. We have had great luck in that park, but good friends have said it's slipping.

Some sights a buckeye ought to see and do in Texas:
In Houston, The LBJ Space Center, The Origial Ninfa's Texmex on Navigation
In San Antonio: The Alamo (remember? the Alamo?) and river walk
In Castroville, Haby's Alsation Bakery
In Uvalde: The John Nance Garner Museum
Near Del Rio: Seminole Canyon State Park
In Alpine: Sul Ross University Museum, The Reata restaurant
The Marfa Lights

Add McDonald Observatory near Ft. Davis and Old Ft. Davis itself (historic cavalry fort). I'd recommend the big swimming pool at Balmorhea State Park, but it will be winter.

We are checking out some of the route variations, mentioned above.
Ironically 75% of the listed must-see are on our list of stops.
Any recommendations for an RV overnight near Marfa; we want to see the lights.
Any shortage of fuel stations or other items I should prep for?

You can stay right in the parking lot. We've done it -- no problems at all.
Don't be disappointed if you don't see lights.

The hill country, just north of San Antonio, has some nice quaint towns to visit - Boerne, Comfort, Fredericksburg, Wimberly, Greune, and others.

We know it will be a chance or roll of the dice. Is the parking lot a good size?
How's the weather in this area in early March.

Seminole Canyon has a nice CG. Alpine has some nice shops/restaurants. You can overnight at the Marfa Lights site or there is a nice CG in Marfa. Also do not miss the Prada store near Valentine.

Take a detour S from Marathon and visit Big Bend Ntl Park. Well worth the detour. Then follow the Rio Grande on 170 to 67 and reach Marfa from the south. (Didn't see the lights). Big Bend is well worth the detour if you have the time. 170 has some hills, but they aren't very long and it follows the river. I would either go thru Big Bend or Fredericksburg. You MUST see the largest roadrunner in the world in Ft. Stockton no matter which way you choose.

Living on 90
I live in Uvalde. With oil field death in Eagle Ford Shale. We are down on the oil field workers. There is a,new boom in shale after Sanderson to El Paso. You will want to fuel at Flying J on I 10 as you enter San Antonio. Next fuel Hondo at Walmart , Heb, for lowest price. Walmart has easy access. Watch out all ,every town from Castroville west is/are speed traps! Plan on stopping at rest stop, between before Sabinal. Get in left lane, exit is left. Must see rest area. Weather! Well it's Texas. Watch cold fronts walking across nation. Your driving west, wind will be on nose, or cross wind, expect over 30kts, if wet front, expect hail, blinding rain or slop. The wind will hit instantly as frt passes. Then you should have blue sky, great sun rise and set. Walmart in del rio is last discount until major city.

Marathon, Alpine and Marfa are all great little towns (lots of history, some great old hotels, shopping as well) with commercial parks close by. Had some great pizza at Guzzy Up in Alpine this past weekend, located across from the Holland Hotel. Davis Mountains State Park is a great park as well, a CCC park, with the famous Indian Lodge. Del Rio? The best part about Del Rio is seeing it in your rear view mirror.

2nd post ww90
del rio
the good, military base has rv camp ground, nice commisary
, medical, good base attitude.
lake amistad great fishing, great sunset over lake
has walmart, on right as you leave town, in shopping center with the usual garbage business.
high crime town. have no trust, lock lock, if anything is left out or not locked, be willing to lose it. expect all to be armed.
as you drive into Sanderson, look at dry river bed. neat roock walls cut by water. already stated
about fueling.
in uvalde if you go north on 55, is a lake and rv park, much nicer then Garner park. Garner Park is over sold, over used. need major investment, urine filter in water. think about it.
Utopia is ok place, sabinal river and its cypress is major site, think john wayne.
batesville - good rv site on fort, swimming in spring filled large pool.
i retired today, so ask any questions, i will ask experts

Sorry to hear about your health. Ironically we both retired from the military in 1994. Army myself. Best to you in your future endeavors.

Once you go west of San Antonio, the next fuel is at least 60 miles away. Always. Fill up often.
When you leave Hwy 90 to go to Big Bend, it's 90 miles to headquarters. And another 40 to the river. Might be a bit of exaggeration, but you get the point. And most fuel stations close early and open early. Some are open on I-10 all night, but they are at least 60 miles away.
And there are few water hookups.
