6 Week road trip with our 2 year old

So this Thursday we are flying from our current home in Puerto Rico, to Florida (our real home) where our Airstream is stored and we are hitting the road for 6 weeks!

We are looking for suggestions on the best campgrounds, must see "attractions" and the best routs to take.

Check out our itinerary and follow along on our blog.

Airstream Road Trip!!

Sounds like a great time.

My only suggestion is to keep your days rather short, or with long breaks, to keep your little one from becoming cranky.

Many rest areas have a play area, all have room for him to run a bit when you stop.

Have a great time,

Maggie

Look into Virginia Highland Haven Airstream Park. It is just a few miles off the parkway. Also in the area is Chateau Morissette winery. I'm not so much a fan of their wines but the tour is interesting due to the construction of the buildings. The restaurant is excellent, and they have a great Sunday Brunch.

6 Week road trip with our 2 year old

Sounds like your family has a wonderful adventure planned. Since we are new to Airstreaming & you"re already seasoned travelers, I only offer some researched & recommended camping locations which might be on your travel route as you head back to PA. Check out Deep Creek Lake State Park, MD : http://reservations.dnr.state.md.us/...&parkId=380522

PA State Parks- Hickory Run State Park & Rickets Glen State Park

We are planning early fall trips at these parks.....have fun!

Thanks guys! Keep the suggestions coming!!

Aside from our first day on the road we are planning on 5-6 hours of driving per day. We want the little guy to enjoy the trip and we want to leave plenty of time for sightseeing, bike rides and hikes.

Things To See/Do Near Asheville

Biltimore Estate is unbelievable. Definitely a must see. Also Asheville is home to the NC Arboretum with its beautiful walking trails and plants. The Arboretum is just off the parkway.
The North Carolina Arboretum

Just down the road from Asheville is Village of Flat Rock. Home to the Carl Sandburg Estate. The home is maintained much as the Sandburg's left it. Also Mrs. Sandburg raised prize winning goats. A small herd of goats is still maintained on the grounds. Your two year old would probably like that.
Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site (U.S. National Park Service)

About 15 miles from Flat Rock is Dupont State Forest. There are many beautiful hiking trails and waterfalls there. Triple Falls is probably too difficult with a 2 year old, but Hooker Falls is a nice leisurely walk from the parking lot. Triple Falls and Hooker Falls were both featured in the film, The Last of the Mohicans.
NCFS - DuPont State Forest

Finally traveling from Dupont State Forest towards Brevard is Pisgah National Forest.
National Forests in North Carolina - Pisgah National Forest
There are many beautiful hiking trails and waterfalls there also. Several falls are very easy hikes (Looking Glass, Moores Cove and Sliding Rock)

Your two year old could easily make all of these.

We go to the Asheville/Hendersonville area at least twice a year. We just love it.
