27 days and counting

Counting down the days until we leave our home in Vermont for the Southwest. This will be our first extended trip and first winter ever outside of Vermont- looking forward to the experience in our 2014 FC.

How exciting. If you come through Kansas City, be sure to try the Bar B Q.

There is an Oklahoma Joes at 119th and Roe. Situated in a large corner shopping area with a large grocery store. So you would have no problem finding parking that would work while you dine. They are not open on Sunday, so be aware of that.

Roe Exit is currently closed off I-435. So take Nall instead to exit; Roe is about a mile east of Nall.

Our final destination is Benson, AZ, but we plan on spending a few days in Albuquerque and then a couple in Deming.

Now that sounds like fun - no winter that is!
Mind you heading out with a new airstream is a lot of fun also. We were in the Tuscon area last winter and actually went down to some caves that might have been near Benson.

How or why did you choose Benson? I'm asking because we have sort of been thinking about that area again this winter.

Cheers

Doug

We'll be meandering down the Mississippi river road visiting, sightseeing a lot on the way, then to New Mexico (between Albuquerque and Deming) for some time and eventually to Voyager in Tucson, a very active and friendly 55+ rv resort. So. Calif then West coast highway on the way home next spring.

Any other snow chickens out there?

Ha Doug - We are leaving here next week to attend the Balloon Rally in Albqe and then on to the the Grand Canyon and into Las Vegas. The plan is to put our unit into storage in Vegas and head home for Christmas... Then in mid January, pick up the trailer again and head toward southern AZ and maybe take part in the Rally in Tucson in late January. (mind you thats still up in the air)

I have heard of Voyager Park so might have to check it out while we are in the area this year. If we do, I'll be sure to look for a silver trailer....

We will stay for a while again Casa Grande as we very much like the rural atmosphere that this small town has.

Cheers
Doug

Casa Grande has a gorgeous 55+ rv resort, a golf course runs through it with lots of activities. We like the Tucson area and Voyager park is out of town.

Look for one of the very few Airstreams, at the northeast edge of the recreation/hobby/community area. You might find us at pickle ball, softball, pools, biking during the day or hobby shop or ballroom at night. Unless we off to explore the area. It's a good life.

Arcticfox no real special reason. This is our first venture so we are on the verge of a lot of experience.

Was up in VT in May and in the Southwest both last year and last month. One thing that you are going to just love is the geography. You have all those gorgeous mountains and streams, everything is kind of closed-in feeling (unless you're on the mountaintop!). The vastness of the desert -- especially -- is just amazing. I don't know where you are headed, but if your travels and time take you to the southwest part of Texas, you will find Big Bend National Park a complete treasure. As I remember, it's 70 miles from where the park begins until you get to the Ranger station. I camped right on the Rio Grande (right behind me), and hiked and explored for a week (not enough). You can leave there and follow the Pecos Trail....the Chihuahuan desert is gorgeous. Well, wherever you go, take your time and enjoy some amazing scenery!

Doug,
We are planning on making the trip down from NH to Tucson in January. Last year we got snowed in and couldn't make in time for the mineral show.

Friends of ours live at Voyager during the winter and travel back to New England for the summers. If things work out we will look you up while there.

Bill

One thing I'd like to pick all of you travel veterans brains on is washing / cleaning exterior of airstream while on the road. Any tricks or tips I should know about?

Rick,

Welcome to you on your first visit to Benson and the greater Tucson area. Don't be in too big a hurry to get down here. It was 100 degrees on my back porch yesterday here in Tucson. My daughter happened to call from Salem, Mass. to stick it to me about the weather. She was very kind to report that it was 61 and the trees were beginning to change back East. Anyway, Benson is a great location for exploring the whole southern Arizona area. Close to Tucson for big city stuff if needed. Tombstone, Bisbee, Kartchner Caverns State Park, Pima Air Museum in Tucson and Titan Missile Silo/Museum in Green Valley. Much, much more that I am probably forgetting. My wife and I would like to make a trip someday back to your part of the country, but we are in full parent watching mode at this point in our lives. We have to stay within one day of Tucson. Hope you have a great visit.

No hurry to get down there! What a contrast, it was 29 here early this morning with a stiff NW wind. We are headed there this week but never in a hurry, arrive sometime in November.

Doug,

You will be good to go by November. I think this is our last hurrah when it comes to the hot weather. The monsoons are over so we are back to our usual dry/low humidity. The early mornings have been nice. We have friends that live in Freeport, Mn. that used to get out here to Tucson once in awhile during the winter. They have not been out for a few years.

Go to a car wash with a power spray, DO NOT use the brush attachment-they scratch the coating on the AS. Wet her down, take a mild car wash designed for the new cars with the polymer coatings on the paint and a microsoft wash mitt. Use a stepladder, I carry mine in the back of the truck, wash her down and rinse well. Then I dry her off with a sham. Bright as new. I wax her before we leave on any long trip. Don't be fooled by the 2015 AS, this is our third and our 15th RV. We have been traveling and camping our whole lives, now retired and traded a Gas Class A for this new one. Very long story.

Have a ball, the SW is our favorite place. PS: The North Rim is more spectacular, but they close the road in on Oct 15th OR after the first snow.

Bud

Hello & thanks from fellow nor'easter newbie,
We just pumped the "pink stuff" today....already looking & trying to plan for winter escape!
We have 25 nights over 5 trips thus far but trying to plan a winter escape is a bit overwhelming.
We would much prefer to head southwest rather than FL. Will be watching your posts on your first long adventure to AZ. Benson looks like a great location. Which CG are you visiting?
Thanks,
FCloud9
