Sbb gives good advice. We make the trip from Mississippi to northeastern NY/VT twice a year, just came back from our 1st 2016 trip. As she recommended, take I-81 to I-84 at Scranton, and I-84 to the NYS Thruway (I-87) Note: as you cross the Delaware River, get off that first exit and go towards Sussex, NJ. It is literally 100 yards off the exit to the NJ border and a bunch of gas stations. This will be the cheapest diesel until you get back to Virginia, so top 'er off! After you get on the Thruway at Newburgh, head north to Albany. Get off at exit 23 (first Albany exit) and take 787 north (this goes through downtown, along the Hudson River, so a little busy at rush hour, but much easier than Chattanooga or Knoxville, which you've already navigated. You'll go around 10 miles on 787 when you come to an exit for NY Rt. 7 East - Troy. Take that exit and stay in the middle lane as you cross the Hudson. NY 7 brings you to Bennington, VT, where you can take US 7 North towards Norwich. An even prettier alternative is to get off the Thruway at exit 24 (which keeps you on I-87) and go north through Saratoga Springs, and then head east into Vermont on NY Rt. 29 east to NY Rt. 22 North to US Rt. 4 and Rt. 4 across VT to Norwich - very beautiful drive! Enjoy!

We camped in Petersburg, NY last night at Aqua Vista Campground. We took exit 23 through Troy. From here, we plan to take Rt 7 to Benningham, Rt 9 to Wilmington and then RT 100 to South Sherburn and onto Norwich. Will try to camp at Recompense tonight or tomorrow night.

God's Country! We lived for 20 years just up Rt. 22 from Petersburg in Cambridge, NY. People would always comment that it looked like a Grandma Moses or Norman Rockwell painting and I'd laugh and point out that Grandma Moses lived 6 miles south of us in Eagle Bridge, NY and Rockwell live 8 miles north of us in West Arlington, VT from 1939 - 1953! Enjoy the northeast, we'll keep Mississippi hot and steamy for you! (t-storms tonight!)

get a 36 gal aux tank in the bed and when you get to half tank turn on the pump and refill as you go.

Love gasbuddy.. the waze app uses GB as its fuel POE info. I like to make sure I update fuel prices when you are moving whether we stop to fuel or not.

Another opportunity to learn presented itself. I had modified the plastic 5-gallon can by drilling a 1/2" hole near the handle and pulled a tubeless tire valve stem through the hole so the diesel would flow better. You remove the valve and screw the cap back onto the stem. The diesel fuel caused the rubber valve stem to deteriorate. The valve stem came off leaving a 1/2" hole with a full can of diesel. Fuel can was inside a black truck box. Diesel went everywhere. Another lesson learned. I am currently in Parrsboro,NS and was able to find a yellow fuel can with an air vent.

We stayed at the Bar Harbor Campground. It was very nice. There are free shuttle buses that run from the campground to Bar Harbor and then to the Acadia National Park Headquarters and then anywhere in the park.

Peggy's Cove

Stayed at King Neptune Campground in Peggy's Cove. I think I should have gone to Lunenburg.

North to Cape Breton

We are staying at MacLeods Campground near Dunvegan,NS. We will travel the Cabot Trail tomorrow; not sure where we will stop. I am thinking we may stay near Cheticamp,NS. Considering taking the ferry from North Sydney to Channel Port aux Basques.

Look up the Grand Codroy campground. It's not far from the Port aux Basques dock and has hookups. There is a welcome center along the way with maps and stuff. If you belong to the BPOE there is a lodge in St. Johns and you can camp there.

Yes, in 2015 we stayed at Grand Codroy on the way out and the night before our return on the Port au Basque - N Sydney ferry. It was a well run, well maintained site with pleasant views and not crowded.

Don't miss a stop in Rocky Harbor and hear "Anchors A Way". A first rate band that is incredibly entertaining. Their songs capture NL life and culture perfectly.

Thanks for the recommendations. We found space on the 5:45 crossing; we arrive in Port aux Basques around 1:30 in the morning. Hoping I can park at the Welcome Center or similar parking.

First Trip, First Mistake - Reminds me before we purchased our first Airstream I had asked my wife how people can make such basic mistakes with such a valuable item as the Airstream.

When driving off the dealer lot for the first time ever towing my airstream, I had left the stairs folded down. Lucky I saw it in the mirror before we pulled onto the hiway. Seems like everyone is always rushing during departure and there's a lot on our minds. I still laugh at myself for that one.

Many trips later we were 40 miles down the road before I realized we I had forgotten the tow mirrors. Duh!! 2 hours lost on that trip.

Now I just try to slow down and get it right. We are going to be late anyhow so another 20min isn't going to matter.
