1st time out

I'm getting ready to take my 34' excella out for the first time. I'm a little nervous having never pulled anything that long before. I am not even sure how my 2500 dodge ram will do. Some say fine some say questionable. I am about to find out.
can anyone recommend a good camp ground within 2 hours drive of St.Louis that would offer easy sccess for a 34 footer with a new driver? I appreciate any advise.

I can't really point ya to a campground but once ya figure out a campsite that sounds interesting - call them and ask if they are 'Big Rig Friendly'...a 34' 'stream may SEEM big but just park next to some of the 5th wheel beasts and you'll get a whole new perspective on BIG.

We tow with a 2500 dodge diesel...no problem. I would guess a gas burner might have a different acceleration profile but the chassis is completely up to the challenge.

I have towed several of the 34 footers from coast to coast with a my 99 Dodge Cummins 2500 with no problems.. McDonalds stops with that size trailer were a bit inconvenient tho.

Good luck on your first tow. We were nervous when we started out too, but I think you'll find that if you've got it hitched right, and take your time, it will be a steady and easy to tow rig. Have a great trip!

I have a 1993 airstream classic 34ft limited. The tow vehicle is a 2008 dodge ram 5.7 hemi.
It pulls fine , this truck puts out approx 345 horse power.
The majority of Tow vehicles back in the old days didn't have this much
hourse power. Just baby it and it will serve you well.

Mark Twain Lake up near Shelbina has a campground with GREAT staff, they have a fun Halloween event. IIRC they are electric only and while not pull through they are nice open lots.
The public park at Hermann would be fun this time of year, if not the easiest access ; )
There is also Sundermeier RV park in St. Charles. That would be a better option for a first adventure I would think (lots of experienced folks available)

Good luck on your first pull. Don't hurry and everything should be fine. As far as parking - practice - practice - practice.

Have fun. You have plenty of truck. Just take it slow and easy.

Hermann park is a great spot, but the weekends are FULL during october. You probably wont get a spot after Thursday, and they are reserved for the weekends. But they are easy to get in.

123f5, go to the Missouri DNR site, Camping Reservation System - Missouri State Parks and Historic Sites, DNR, and look at camp sites. They show pictures of each site, and will tell you which ones may be pull through. Hermann is a neat little city park, we stayed there our 1st night after picking up our trailer in August.

Hey! Find yourself a nearby medical plaza. On Sunday, go to the parking lot with some cones and practice backing it into a "space". Practice on Sunday will give you much needed confidence on your trip. Practice, Practice, Practice. Also, on the highway, stay in the right lane and travel @ 60 mph. You'll arrive relaxed.
