I own a 1989 argosy fifth wheel. Bonded Al is the answer! It is referred to as a tension bonded aerospace technology. The aluminum is actually heavier than the standad riveted kind by a very small amount.

Smile SquareStream Exterior

I'm new to these forums, but their is one thing for certain, Airstream Land Yacht, or Square Stream is made of aluminum. I just replaced the water inlet and my Father in Law and I spent quite of bit of time looking at the construction of it and were amazed the more we looked, the Agrosy were made with fiberglass. SquareStreams were made completely from Aluminum. Now that we own a SquareStream, would not own anything else. (Just my 2 cents)

Correction, the Argosy was also aluminum. The difference is in the paint color. both actually have some fiberglass inserts. The lower corner pieces are fiberglass as are the upper fore and aft intersection. (Where the clearance lights are mounted.) My rear window fram is also fiberglass molded where it indents. The later (mid 90's) fifth wheels were fiberglass. I am resurecting my rare argosy 1989 fifth wheel, Land yacht when painted silver. I am also impressed with the construction, but have found alot of moisture damage. Keep all roof and trim sealed. I inherited/purchased quite a job of interior overhaul, but I am learning alot. The floor system is the weakest part.

Does Fiberglass Oxidize? Yes

Yes.

I don't know if Squarestreams are made of aluminum, fiberglass or some combination of the two. Sounds like it depends on the year. Also sounds like some people are confusing the old style Squarestream with the more recent motor homes that have squared off body lines.

Regardless, fiberglass does oxidize. Almost everything oxidizes in some manner. Some materials oxidize slowly, some oxidize more quickly. Some oxidation can cause severe degredation of the material (steel rusting for instance) and some oxidation in not as serious. Many household cleaners promote oxidization - that's how they clean - by oxidizing unwanted material (dirt) and flushing it away.

The 1986 Argosy thru the 1990 Airstream Squarestream trailers are made of bonded aluminum sidewall skins,a special alloy, tension leveled for smoothness. The skin was then permanently bonded with a proven space age adhesive to the structural cage.It was then painted Beige for Argosy or Silvers for Airstreams.
The 1991/92 model Squarestream underwent change when the aluminum was changed to new high-gloss fiberglass. They where a silver gray color.
Please see thread Squarestream history for more info.

I can't help myself. I am almost finished with a complete restoration of an argosy fifthwheel which is the same structure as the airstream trailers. I do not know about the argosy or landyacht motorhomes. I can assure you all, that the platform frame is steel, the shell frame is aluminum. the skin is aluminum bonded and stretched. the Insulation is sprayed foam in the walls and fiberglass batts in ceiling. The only exception to wall material is the fore and aft end caps from center up to top. They are molded fiberglass and joined with rivets to the aluminum. This is where my rear window is mounted and the fore and aft clearance lights. I think we can all claim victory because both aluminum and fiberglass was used. I will gladly show anyone my proof pictures if you are not convinced. I restrict my comments to the 1988 to 1991 squarestream trailers. I have read the the 95 vintage fivers were fiberglass. Have fun, John

Argosy Squarestream's are aluminum - not fiberglass!

Square Atreams are Aluminun (and Fiberglass)

wanderer1 you are correct in saying that the Squairstream is an aluminum trailer. That was true until 1990, when they changed from aluminum to fiberglass, Mine is a 1992 26' Land Yacht and it is one of the last Land Yacht Trailers that was produced.

Sorry, It's a 33 footer not a 31. It was sold to me as a 31 footer but I now have found out it is realy a 33 footer. Wondered why it looked so long.

87 Argosy 33 ft

I own an 87 Argosy 33 which is aluminum outer skin with a plywood inner skin. I am currently restoring and searching for replacement inner wood ceiling panels, or suggestions on how to replace ceiling panel around TV antenna damage from water

Good luck with that, I've been searching too! The panels have a 1/4" styrofoam backing glued to it.....I can't find it anywhere.

I own a 1989 squarestream fifth wheel. I will say with confidence, having done a complete restoration, that the exterior walls are bonded aluminum. There are two areas of molded fiberglass. The front face up to the the first seam on top and around the front corners to the first seam is fiberglass. Also, the rear molded end, with rear window. All sides, roof, cabin framing, etc. are ALUMINUM! Some have reported delamination but I have had none. The paint is Argosy and is in great shape. I do get slight oxidation that is easy to buff out. I must be one of the elusive owners, but I am not on the sight much. I am glad to share pictures of restoration on request. Mine is still registered for over the road. I understand that is pretty rare indeed.
