New Squarestream Owners!

Hello all.

29' Airstream Land Yacht.

We just picked up our Squarestream today after looking for a while.
She is needing some work to be long-weekend worthy, vent broken in back bedroom causing leak.

Everything else is good so far, can't wait till we take her out for a test weekend.

Congrats on the very unique Airstream. We love ours and think that the Squarestream had the nicest interior of any of that era.
Something you may not be aware of that has caused Squarestream qwners a problem, If you still have the Orig. LP bottles with the old style valves make sure that whoever fills them knows that they are exempt from being converted to the new style valves and they must be filled the old fashioned way. Anyone who has never done it that way may not be able to fill them for you and some places will refuse to fill them because they don't know that they are exempt.

Is there any new documentation I could download regarding the LP tanks, is it state by state or countrywide?
I have a feeling I should have some paperwork to show the gas fillup places when filling tanks that lay flat.

Thanks.

Fridge seems to have crapped out also, repair/rebuild or new?

Carpet out, new bamboo floor going in soon.
Have a few leaks to contend with first, all seem to be on the doors side, could be the awning needs to be removed and seal the rivets again.
The roof to side seam looks like a bad previous caulk job, need to powerwash and go over all the seams again when the weather cooperates.
Need to pull the fridge to fix the cooling unit, anyone done this job before?

Been there done that.

Squair,
Regarding the LP tanks. The people that filled my tanks the first time have now refused to fill them any longer. No amount of explaining would change their mind. I told them that I would bring written evidence of the law but the manager said that he didn't want any thing to do with them any longer. I know that that would happen some were on a trip and we wouldn't be able to get them filled so I bit the bullet and bought new ones.
I settled for 30 lb. steel tanks because of the extremely high prices for Horizontal tanks. New 30 lb. steel are retailing for $200 each PLUS
shipping. New 40 lb Aluminum tanks like the Original ones are well over $400 each. I found some new 4 year old ones on ebay for $126 each plus shipping for a total of $332.60. He had a few more left and his phone number is 970-870-9525.

Regarding the Refrigerator unit replacement. I replaced mine and it worked out O.K. The units are about $450 and it is a heavy job that would be very difficult unless you have mechanical ability. Also be sure that everything else is O.K. before getting the unit because if there is any electronic problems you will have a bunch more invested to get it working. Although mine now works well I am not sure that I would go that route again as I had a Model 2801 Dometic that does not have an automatic change over from Electric to Gas or vice versa and I think I would rather pay the extra and get a more modern one with all new electronics. If you do decide to change the unit yourself contact me for a lot of good tips that will help you do it right the first time as the instructions that came with the unit left a lot to be desired.

Regarding the leaks the Sq. Stream seems to be somewhat of a leaker especially above the doors and around the windows. I do like it a lot and it defientley has much better insulation than other Airstreams I have owned and it is very plush inside.

Good luck with the restoration and please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have.

Propane

I have taped a copy of the federal law that states horizontal tanks are exempt. This has worked quite well. I have only had one instance where there was a problem with refilling the tanks, but that was due to a question of the age of the tanks.

Propane

I guess that I should have said where I taped the info. I have a copy of the info taped to each bottle and this seems to answer the question about the legality of the bottles before it becomes an issue.

Thank you.
What do you want to know about the water filler? The front filler (BLUE) is your fresh water tank ,the rear one (RED) is to flush out your black tank.
Front one BLUE has:
"Warning:,
Potable water only.Sanitize, flush and drain before using.see instruction manual"
Rear one RED has:
" Attention:
Holding tank flushing only. Do not use potable water hose."

Thanks for the info Jimmini, I should have been more specific.
I am looking for the tag you have put on the LP tanks regarding the rule about refilling them.

Look at post here under SQUARESTREAM PROPANE BOTTLES dated 06-06-09.
Also when you have your bottles certifed thay should put on a lable that has "CAUTION This cyllinder is not equipped with an OPD valve."

Hi Everyone

I will try to get the info exempting the horizontal bottles from the OPD and post it this weekend. I need to remove one of my tanks to get the document. Its worked well for me - hope it will help some of you.
