Let the Squarestream Reno Begin!

I started to gut my new to me Squarestream, mainly to replace a water damaged ceiling, some old carpet, and to de-80's it a bit. There was some floor rot in the rear bedroom and some rusted frame components. Some outriggers and the rear cross member will have to be replaced. As I work forward though, the frame is in surprisingly good shape, almost mint. I think most is repairable without doing a frame off.

Well I've pulled the bathroom out and found no leaks. There is a leak at the rear though, I think it's from one of the clearance lights. Most of the carpet is out. I just have to remove the closet to get at the rest. I think this is as far as I will go with floor replacement. One thing I didn't realize is that the floor seems to be one solid piece, from front to back. Two 4x8 sheets will replace what I've removed. I'll reinforce the front bathroom wall, so I can mount a TV on it. I'm thinking of using and aluminum finish Formica for the walls and ceiling. Everything has been going well so far, except for one bonehead move.......I cut into the black tank with a skill saw! Should I replace it or plastic weld it?

I found the leaks in the rear bedroom. The caulking on one of the clearance lights was not sealing, I suspect that was right from the factory, and the seam for the end cap and roof. The end caps btw, are fiberglass joined to the aluminum roof by an aluminum trim piece then caulked and covered by a plastic trim. The plastic breaks down in the weather. I'll have to come up with a better solution for that seam, then let the weather at it before I replace the floor.

As to the black tank. Given that all the tanks have done 25-years of service it may a good idea to replace them all. Seal them in better and add electric heat to tanks and pipes before re insulating and sealing back up (from bottom). I wouldn't assume tank hangers aren't themselves in need of replacement. Not trying to spend your money, but I sure wouldn't want to have to do such extensive work after interior back in place.

Same for replacing grey poly plumbing with PEX and upgrading that system where beneficial

Glad you've not run into real damage. (Fingers crossed).

Welcome and good luck with your BIG project. Square Streams are rather unusual. I really don't know their history. Here are a couple of photographs of ones I've spotted over the years.

I'll be following your project with interest. I have a 1989 32ft Squarestream that is in need of much the same treatment. We have a soft floor in the bedroom by the bathroom because of a plumbing leak. Our walls are also rippling and partially delaminating from the humidity of living in it full time in Nova Scotia while building a house. It's hard to allow much air flow when it's -10...
The floor is one solid piece of OSB? I plan on replacing it all with 4X8 plywood anyway, as I imagine you are as well. OSB should never have been used for an object used outdoors. I had planned on reskinning the inside with galvalum but the aluminum finish formica sounds interesting.
Good luck with the rebuild ! I'm looking forward to seeing your progress.

If your trailer is not a Canadian trailer I thing your propane tanks will have to be changed. If you have the old orig. alum.tanks, I think Canam RV has a change that will meet Canada's reg. Also look at Canada recall on that trailer some items did not meet Canada reg and had recall. I think one was to add clearance lights over wheel well.

It's been a Canadian trailer at least for the last 10 years, but originally from Florida. Tanks are steel and can go horizontal, or vertical. That being said I was at Canam RV and inquired about going vertical. They have some used covers that would work perfectly and I can use that space for more storage. The clearance lights are not over the wheel wells.....I'll look into that and put them in during the reno.

I plan to have this done by next summer, and one year from today, I'll be retired, and I'll be heading your way jimmini!!

I think recall 1996152 is to replace the VIN label to be bilingual for the GAWR and GVWR

I gave credence to the thread title with my sideways photo of a Squarestream parks in Reno, NV.

Well I've been digging deeper into this trailer. I think I'm going to do a full shell off restore. The outriggers on the frame have to be replaced, and the floor is rotting in the front. The trailer is almost all gutted now, so I might as well go all the way.

Now that the weather is getting better, I've been getting back to work on the Squarestream. The shell is ready to be removed from the chassis, hopefully in the next few weeks. Then I can get started on chassis repair. Every outrigger needs to be replaced, then sand blasted and painted. It's going to be a lot of work. My plan is to get it done by the end of the year although there's no real hurry...I'll be retired, but my wife won't be, so it's not like we'll be using it for awhile.

Almost a clean slate. Hopefully lifting the shell off tomorrow if it doesn't rain.

You've completed a lot of work. They sure look different from the standard round Airstream. It looks like a lot more interior volume.

Good luck with the shell removal process.
