What is this trailer?

This trailer appeared in the storage yard a couple of months ago. I haven't met the owner, but it looks as if some work is being done. There is no builder's plate that I can find.

There are two doors. The second door is in the bedroom on the road side.

The woodwork inside is really beautiful. The cabinets have curved corners, much like my 2003 International. The wood is really pretty with a lot of grain. There is a big galley and a dinette forward that seats at least six comfortably.

My guess is a Spartanette.

Watch out John. When you start asking questions like this you are getting very close to the edge. It may only one or two steps to the truly slippery slope - vintage trailers.

I would have a vintage if the covenants here would allow me to work on one at home. I was offered a fifties model and had to turn it down. I can do a lot at the storage yard, but not a major renovation.

Maybe you need to move to a less exclusive neighborhood.

But the restoration process is only a short-term problem...well, if you call a couple of years "short-term". Think of all the fun you would have with it when you're done!

Or you could always buy one already done - then it's just like a modern trailer, minor maintenance.

Spartanette. We 'lived' in several 'trailer parks' on our family move to Ca. from Mich. in '52....via RTE 66. although most trailers of the day looked similar (ours was a '50 Pan American 26') the Spartan line stood out even to a 14 year old.

Sorry I didn't see this back a couple of years ago when this conversation was taking place. She is indeed a 1948 Spartanette 24, and a wonderful old girl. I was living in Austin, Texas when these photos were taken, and have since brought her with me to a new home in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. The old Spartans were a bit more common out in Texas, but you *never* see them here in Virginia.

Welcome to the forum. That sure is a beauty you have there. I have always admired the Sparton trailers.

Did you bring all this hot weather from Texas we have had for the past week or so? Our son lives in Fort Worth. He suggested we move out there. We told him no way. We like four seasons and are happy in Virginia. Welcome to Virginia. It is a great state.

Since you mentioned the Blue Ridge Mountains, I am curious about where you live. We love camping in the mountains.

Well I guess after discovering this thread after 2 years the least I could do is supply a few current photos - bear with me on that, but I will definitely post a few.

When I was initially bitten by the vintage trailer bug and was deciding which trailer was right for me, one of the first threads I happened upon while researching was the one here at Airforums by member ST131, detailing his gorgeous Spartanette Tandem (http://www.airforums.com/forums/f417...1-a-50310.html)

I can't tell you how many times I read and reread that thread and thought to myself "Where in the world can I find one of THOSE??" The more research I did, the more I began to narrow my search towards the Spartanette. I'm an art director by trade, and the lines of the old Spartanettes just spoke to me on a visceral level. The interiors are just marvelous, too. Eventually I found mine (originally from Arizona and overall in very nice shape) and I've been enjoying it ever since.

Currently I'm in project mode and she's a little bit apart as I'm attempting to get her back to as close to original as possible. She came with a non-original stove and no refrigerator at all, and I'm attempting to fill those voids with good period originals if I can find 'em. I've also got a set of KD-540 running lights that I need to mount. Considering adding AC if I can do so unobtrusively as I find myself much less tolerant of the heat the older I get. Wheels currently removed getting new tires mounted. Lots of little things to do, as always, but that's half the fun of owning these old vintage trailers for those of us who enjoy such things.

At any rate, I'm glad to have stumbled upon this thread, and will pop back in soon to post some photos. Thanks for indulging me!

Oh, we'll indulge you. Spartans are cool past belief. Sort of like Packard . . if only conditions had been such that each were today the American "Mercedes" of their type.
