Since you were first to suggest it, captions for that photo will now be running through my head for the next few months, in the same way I can't ever seem to shake old Stephen Foster tunes out of my feeble mind, ("...it rained all night the day I left...").

I hate to do this but I cann't help myself. If someone built a trailer using Wally's original plans will it qualify to be in the WBCII without a vote?

no, because it isn't built in Jackson Center, by airstream employees, nor distributed and serviced by airstream dealers.

That can't be correct. The oldest Airstream was built from plans by Dr. Holman and is in the WBCCI.

Only new trailer are ditributed by Airstream Dealers and most are serviced by the owners.

Yes, we all will have to gather in front of the torpedo at Perry Ga. and rip off the WBCCI numbers.

LOL! yes, either that, or the search for the absolute, universally accepted definition of "Airstream" continues...

I would think that the plans would be needed, not just photos of the doc's trailer. He made so many changes to the trailer over the years, that I have to wonder how much of it actually is original!

I do remember speaking with doc Jr and he informed me that even if someone did use his plans to make a trailer that it would not be legally recognized as an Airstream.

why? current model AS mh's aren't silver...and they are "airstreams"....

I really didn't want to relocate the debate over here...but "airstreams" have been many things. they've been trailers...and mh's. they've been roundish, and square-ish. theyve been different colors, and "no" color. they've been class a, b, AND c mh's. Some of them have even been made by someone else. Late model Airstream MH's are "really" nothing but Thor creations with the word "Airstream" painted on the outside. I don't think their proposal is a huge leap from what already exists.

Confused

Could we keep this thread on the $5.00 plans and the MOHO issue in the MOHO thread? I read both and it will really mess me up and I will get confused more than I already am.

Thanks Jim

well, then, I guess we have to kick out the doc, cuz his trailer doesn't meet that standard.

Actually, yes. Doc Holman's Airstream is allowed into the WBCCI because there is a provision that allows the owner of any surviving trailer made with the original plans to become a member of the WBCCI. This was done rather than just saying Doc Holman, Sr. could join so as to not show prejudice or favoritism. This is how Doc Holman, Jr. remains a member after his father passed. It will also allow any future owners of this particular trailer to be a member, too.

If Doc Holman, Jr. released the plans and someone made a trailer from those plans that trailer would meet the provision and the owner would have to be allowed to join even though the trailer didn't meet the intent of the provision. The provision was granted to allow Doc Holman to join since his is the oldest known "Airstream" in existence. What kind of Airstream only club would it be if they didn't allow the original owner (speaking of the Doc Holman, Sr. and when he joined) of the only surviving first generation Airstream to join?

Any torpedo owner that wanted to join at this point would have to provide the provenance of their trailer to prove that they didn't just build it from pictures of Doc Holman's trailer, i.e. they would have to prove it dated back to the 1930's era or the plans it was built from were genuine to the era. This is to keep WBCCI wannabees from skirting the issue of buying a genuine Airstream product...wait, this is leading us to the Thor/Mandalay--Four Winds issue again; never mind!

Well, back to the issue, sort of.

Making Plans

Were the plans sold with a stipulation that only one trailer could be constructed from a set of plans and any additional trailers would have to pay a licensing fee? I am not sure building from Dr. Holmann’s plans would be legal or not. I would guess the copyright has run out and they are public domain.
