I think the rule is that the underwater part must be painted yellow sort of like the lil happy face.
I didn't see the clip of the car with the ramp around it. Would be a bugger to park at your local Wally World I'll bet.

Vitage Anomoly/ I resemble that remark!
Yeah, A flatbed pontoon boat about 60 feet long I can drive my truck and trailer up onto lock, stock and barrel. There would be horizonatal cylinders in the deck that drive the paddlewheels from the rear wheels of my truck. The front wheels of my pick up would rest on a plate in the deck connected to a pivot which in turn is linked to the rudder. Besides houseboat it is also a personal ferry. I have not yet a name for her, SS Alumanomoly?

I am positive that the front end cap is "home made" because those end cap panels continue all the way down to the belt line below the side windows. Original 13-panel endcaps should end above the front window, which means they should stop at about the same height as the top of the side windows.
I do believe the rest of this trailer is a 1964 Globetrotter. The combination of a 5-panel rear endcap and a "door-in-a-door was a 1964 only combination. The interior from the door back is correct for a 1964. The dinette doesn't seem exactly right although it could be original, and the fold down bed above it is obviously home made. I will also agree that the truck looks a little newer to me than 1964. I'm not an expert, but the suggestion it could be a 1969 seems more appropriate.

This is just wrong on so many levels...
1972 AIRSTREAM 19 FT DUAL AXLES VINTAGE
Thought is had a "blank canvas" potential until I spied the rear end pic

Hi GP, Did you notice the owner slapped some bearing buddies on the hubs. Probably some issues with the hubs as well. Very interesting trailer...

Good catch Lee - I missed that one.
Anybody want to guess what this was in it's previous life?

19' ended in '64. '65-'68 was 20'
However, the taillights say at least '69 which would make it either an 18' or a 21'
But...Dual axles on a 19' ???

This has to be a chop job. A longer trailer was cut down and new skin was added in the middle.
Nice wheels....

It looks to me like someone made a toy or tool hauler out of a larger trailer, cut to size to fit their needs at the time. I suspect that's why the bearing buddies - it was treated like any other utility vehicle - or that's my guess....
Too bad it's in such brutal shape.

man, you guys (and gals) are exceeding harsh!!! Maybe this was from something that had a tree fall across the middle. Or maybe it is like AverageJoe's rodent-poop-filled Ambassador. Who knows what forces a decision to "downsize?" Whatever it was, I think it's a very interesting exercise in making a very short two axle Airstream. Put a couple windows back in and it would start to look "normal." Oh, define normal, please. w)
Anyone got the pontoons yet? Maybe that's what AverageJoe should do with the Amabassador shell. Given that there will be any water in Lake Powell or Lake Meade next year...
What's a bearing buddy?

Zep -
I did mention "blank canvas" - It wasn't the innovative recycled creation of the PO that turned me off, rather the crunched rear end cap and the rear door hack job. If it wasn't for the extra work/cost of replacing the rear segments, it could be reborn as a very interesting trailer.

I have to agree. Making a trash hauler out of a shell is a crime, but an interesting crime--sort of in the same class as silicon these days. (shields are coming up....)
You could almost show up looking cool, until the ATV came out of the back end...now if it was a Harley, that's another story.
What it needs is windows....

Well I think that the Trailer has a front section on the back. You can see that the aft section has, what looks like to me, wing windows that have been sheeted over. Both front and back look to me that they are both 70's and the taillights look early 70's also.
Creating a tandam axle 20 footer out of a longer trailer sounds like a fun project to me and I wouldn't have bad dreams at night doing so. It is just part of the cycle of life. I've seen many aircraft be recycled in many different ways too.

I asked the seller the following:
Quote:
Do you know the history of this unit? The absence of the interior and windows make it a little harder to identify. The taillights say it's probably a 1969. However Airstream did not make a 19' trailer in '69 - let alone a dual axle! This is most likely a longer trailer that has been cut down and rebuilt. Do you know what it was originally? Thanks,
|
Just got this reply from the owner:
Quote:
I don't know the history. The person I purchased it from about 18 months ago lived south of LA and was using it to store personal items. He said he had it for several years. He got it from a company who bought it abandoned from a trailer storage yard. I have no idea if it was cut down. The flooring looks to be original and not cut down. I never have seen a 19 ft dual axle.
|
"flooring looks to be original" - sure it does. It appears to me that it leaks profusely, so by now the floor probably does look old and original!

Aerowood -
You're right, but he/she must have just used the top half of a front section, as the taillights must be original. I don't think anyone would go to the trouble of adding the taillights back in when they "don't work". That means two trailers must have given their life for this creation.

Don't laugh - Brad and I will probably be bidding on this guy, since it fills our needs in a couple areas:
1) We may be making a move in the next couple years, and were considering buying a box truck to transport some of our stuff. This could sub for the box truck, and no extra engine to maintain!
2) It would be perfect for hauling my little racecar in, once the back door is expanded and the frame/floor is beefed up.
Having no side windows is helpful for both uses.
See - it IS useful to *some* people...
