The Mysterious Nyx and My Full-timing Life

Well, the "one-month" makeover is officially completed and I'm now a full timer. The issues are different and I felt it was only appropriate to begin a new thread in honor of "our" status change.

To that end I'll begin with this link: http://www.littlegiantladder.com/lit...lect-step.html

I need a ladder. Not just any ladder but one I will feel secure on, by myself, while performing all exterior maintenance (including roof).

Any thoughts? (Seriously, I've never purchased anything larger than a three-step kitchen ladder.)

I have an LG ladder. It will suit you well, I think.

A mod is to add a 2x4 across the vertical legs, left-to-right long enough to bridge at least two adjacent ribs. I just toss a wide strip of kitchen drawer non skid on roof area, lay either a 3/4" thick plywood section or board on top then extend ladder to roof level and scoot up.

You should not worry about ladder sliding off. But, tying off to yourself or side of trailer may provide security you are comfy with.

Thanks cwf and Overlander63! I've taken a look at both ladder styles and they have much to offer.

Camping world in Little Rock carries the tele so I'll get to look at that in the next week or so. In the mean time I'm borrowing the wooden stepladder from the hardware store and saying lots of prayers.

Ceiling vent fan replacement

Today I drilled the bucked rivets holding in the collar from what once was a ceiling exhaust fan. Now it's a hole in the roof with a cover screwed down over it.

Rivets drilled today.

Tomorrow I will finish loosening the collar from the roof. Today I was scraping out sealant the consistency (and color) of plumbers putty. Since this was an original installation, any ideas on what was used? Mostly, just curious.

Now to the actual reason for this post....

I'll be installing a new fan. Yes, someday I'd love to find a fan to fit the original collar (that I will be holding on to). But, for now, I need the air to move as my AC isn't working.

Everyone has a preferred sealant, I'm finding out. Okay, that makes sense, but it is leaving me confused.

1. What do I want to seal the old rivet holes with?

2. When I install the new fan what should I use to seal that?

Can the same product be used or do they need to be different? If so, why? Curious minds like to understand these things.

Hi, Valk,

My two cents worth to some of your questions. . .

Ladders:

We carry a Telesteps telescoping ladder and a 4-foot Wagner magnesium stepladder in the back of the tow vehicle when on the road. Both have come in handy many times. (The little stepladder was an impulse buy--on sale at Lowe's for $20 or something like that--but has paid for itself many times over.)

Sealants:

Can't say for Streamline, but for many years Airstream used the original Vulkem sealant, a gray polyurethane made by Trempro. Old Vulkem is not too different in consistency from old plumber's putty.

Good old Vulkem was killed off by EPA Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) regulations but the current Trempro 635 is supposed to be about the same.

TremPro 635

I use it for all sealing purposes. The outstanding characteristic is that it sticks very tenaciously to aluminum, as you have already discovered in scraping off the factory sealant. (Assuming Streamline used Vulkem.)

And a question--what does Nyx have to do with this thread? (Do I assume correctly that the thread title refers to Nyx, the daughter of Chaos?)

"The Mysterious Nyx" (Nyx for short) is my trailer.

According to Wikipedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Night_(mythology) - Nyx is the daughter of Chaos and her appearances in mythology are sparse. She is portrayed as a figure of exceptional power and beauty. She is found in the shadows of the world and only ever seen in glimpses.

And thanks for the great sealant info!

When I replaced the vent on a Shasta, I used button tape between the vent and trailer, then sealed the edge with lapseal (or vulkem in this case).

To seal holes for now you could fill with vulkem and a screw, or if its thick enough just vulkem.

When I replaced the skylight, 3M Extreme Sealing Tape came in handy to seal over the mount screws and curb, used 2 1/2" wide.
It's not cheap, (found best price Amazon), but sticks like krazy and will seal just about anything, whats left of the roll stays in the AS toolkit.

POI...we also use the Telesteps ladder, light easy storage, well made.
Although I did have to up-grade the plastic non-slip feet. The concrete pad wore thru them pretty quick. C/S department replaced minimal charge. I now use a non-slip mat on the pad.

Where to place smoke alarm?

Trailer is 29' long. Layout: front living room, then galley, bedroom and back bath.

Instructions say to place alarm at least 10' from stove.

Been reading the forums and they say to place alarm outside sleeping area.

Electrical/tankless water heater closet is in bathroom.

Suggestions?

I'm thinking in the bedroom area itself which would put it between the two "combustion" zones.

Ceiling Fan Replacement - Update

Got the collar off and started working on stripping the silver asphalt paint. Made the startling discovery that the center section of my roof is actually white under all that sludge!

If you had asked me, I would have sworn I had pre-redo pictures of everything on Nyx. Guess not. I do not have a good picture of the fan. But, here are the pictures to date. Fan back in June - if you squint real hard at the top of the photo. Then photos of rivets drilled, collar removed and some of the paint removed.

Back to work.

3M Wind Protection Tape Edge Sealer - W2600 (used to seal plastic to aluminum on wind farms). Anyone know anything about it? I was just given a packet of it.

Thumbs up

Well, 3M makes good stuff...should be able to find a good use for it.

Maybe try it on the LPG tank cover, see how tough it is, or the window rock guard.

Putty Tape - Fan Installation Today

My local marine and RV store (Miss Donna - been doing this 40+ years! thank you very much!) steered me towards putty tape yesterday.

I don't have a huge choice of suppliers and the closest "large" cities (Hot Springs, Arkadelphia, Texarkana) are at least a thirty mile drive to start.

We'll see how it goes.

My solution to a huge hole in the ceiling for the night...

Fan is installed!

Pictures to follow. Now, must go figure out simple two-wire electrical hook-up. Electrical is so not my thing and I only have one wire showing which I THINK means I ground to the frame.

Well, it's probably good I didn't hook up the electricity as I have three bowls, one frying pan and a towel under my new fan catching the water from the leaks as the current line of thunderstorms rolls through.

Guess I'll tackle all of this again on Monday, after the rain.

Is the fan 12v or 120V?

Is the wiring 120v or 12v?

The one fan in our trailer is 120V.

As for your vent, I read you need tape between the vent and roof. But you alao want to seal around the lip with Vulkem or something similar

That worked on our Shasta.

The fan is leaking around the rim...and it's a 12v.

I'm turning in for the night. I took a total down day today and am. Rey glad I did. Tomorrow I have to climb back up on the roof.
