I've got a Woody

No seriously....a Woody Tear Drop.

Amy and I were talking about what she was going to do with the Airstream for the year I will be in Afghanistan, and she was not quite prepared to hook-up and tow this monster in our side drive. She still wanted to take Collin camping, and make rallies, but needed something that would work better for her.

The solution, a tear drop trailer.

We had looked at T@B trailers long before our first Airstream, but thought the price was outrageous. Other teardrops were not enough for the price that we saw. After checking out mikenchell.com (The best tear drop site on the web), I located a tear drop for sale 40 miles from me. Better yet, the were willing to add side windows, a vent, and an AC unit for me. The owner also has a 56 Bubble that I got to look at. I have to wait for a title to be issued before I get it, but it is done for what they are doing to it.

The plan is to add some kind of shore power to the trailer. I just need 15-20 Amps to run the window AC unit, or any small items like a clock radio or laptop. The interior is bare and ready for me to finish. The galley is a partial clamshell with the AC venting below it from a cool louvered panel. A new frame, heavy duty axle, and real wheels and tires (Not those 12" utility tires) round it out. The galley is bare and we will use a small stove in it.

I hope to have a tent fabricated that fits onto one side of the trailer after I return home. This will give us extra room for changing, and will allow all three of us to travel together when we cannot take the Airstream.

Great looking little trailer. We have friends who tow a similar trailer behnd a hot rodded '48 Merc convertible and they have gone for several months at a time on the road. When a shower is needed and they are boondocking they hit the local showers at the town swimming pool. Now and then they've also found that local small motels will rent them a room with shower for shower purposes only for 5 bucks and they use their own towels.

You should have fun finishing up the way you need it.

Err,

We've already met Colin...

Seriously, appreciate what you are doing, but really wish you were staying home with Amy and Colin! Wish all our troops were home and there was no need for them.

Thank God for all of them!

Be careful out there.

Neat little trailer though. I look forward to seeing it.

You need to skin it with the shinny stuff.... AKA ALUMINUM!!! Then you will have a trailer from vintage roots.... Just an idea... But cool none the less...

Thanks all for the nice words.

Vaughn, I wish we were not needed over there either, but our commander in chief deems it an absolute necessity, and I stand ready to go and fulfill my obligation to myself and the country.

Vin, I was originally looking at an aluminum skinned model, but they wanted alot more money for it, and it wasn't road ready (and no AC for that matter).

It seems Airstreams and Tears go together. The fabricator of this unit had his Bubble, and also is starting to create beautiful aluminum louvered AC covers like the one on this Bambi.

I think U underestimate that lady. IF you followed the thread of the "We CAN TOW IT" rally in OHIO the end of APRIL those were 90% women doin the drive'n. We men only went along to do stuff like wash'n dishes and taken out the gray water and moral support. We were allowed to tag along.
Im sure "She CAN TOW IT"
Hope we get to see ya in August !

Roger,

I don't estimate anyone. She has told me that she is not comfortable towing the Airstream, backing up to it alone, hooking it up by herself, etc. If she is uncomfortable, then I will not push her into anything.

See you on the 16th.

Steve

Steve, thanks for this nice thread. After looking over what you have posted I suspect you're right: there IS something about airstreams and these tears that DOES seem to go together.
