I ended up buying an Avalair. Can I still post here? :-)
I was looking for an Airstream but found a 1962 Avalair at such a great price that I couldn't resist it.
I will be spending the next two months getting it road ready and then I'm ready to see America!
My main concern will be accessing wireless Internet service wherever I go. I have a telecommuting job, which is how I'm able to do this trip to begin with. But, if I'm not able to log in, this won't work. I would love to hear any advice on that from anyone with experience in that area.
I'm really excited!

Many of the campgrounds have wifi internet access. Some are free; some charge. We use an Altell EVDO aircard. It works great and is usable antwhere you can get a cell signal.

I've seen two people using Hughes satellite comm systems in order to link "up" with work on the road. Look in the Classifieds for a 28' International CCD for sale. In one of the pix you will find one of these Hughes antennas. If you really need to connect anywhere you can see the satellite, that's the way to go. I have no idea of the cost.

Congratulations on your purchase. You are most welcome here and in fact we have added a special section called Vintage Kin. Post some pictures I love to see the vintage models.

Avalair
Avalair? Sounds like the product of an illicit encounter between an Avion and an Airstream. It was a dark and stormy night..........
Or, Someone with parts was pixilated.

Looks like fun! http://photos1.blogger.com/hello/245...0Trailer.0.jpg
The answer to your question? Bring it to a Forums rally and you will have all sorts of onlookers! A lot of the basic upkeep issues would probably be similar to Airstreams. It'll be curious to see what was different.
We drool for pictures!

If you're going to telecommute you need both and Aircard type cellular connection and a wifi card. You can connect anywhere there is a cellular signal with Verizon or Sprint (your choice) and then if you've got a free wifi signal you can get more bandwidth. Cost will be about $60 a month for unlimited use.... Don't let them sell you a broadband card!!! The systems are not anywhere close to build out and are only in a few cities yet.
BTW nice trailer, happy trails...

Job Depends On...
well, if your job requires you to "stay connected", i would'nt be looking for "free" hot spots, unless you want to become the newly unemployed w/ a nice vintage trailer.
there's some options.
i'm using the new blackberry from verizon. i have cell, data, internet, texting all in one package and i can use the crackberry as a "tethered" modem for high speed internet access (connects to my laptop via USB cable, supplied w/ phone), at no extra charge for unlimited monthly use.
the hot ticket with this setup, all my email is forwarded to both my phone and the server 24/7. i'm always in contact. like right here.
of course there will be people here who will hate this idea. to each his own, i'm sure theres better stuff out there.
i've only been one place where i could'nt get a signal, in an rv park in the middle of nowhere, deep in a canyon. so morale of the story, don't goto deep canyons while connecting w/ work.
or as suggested above,
purchase a satelite system. i have also seen those on the road and have no idea regarding cost. you probably could look it up online, i'm sure.

I havent been kicked off yet
So far, I havent been kicked off for prattling on about our '63 Avion T-20, So I think its all good
Fortunatly the rivited aluminum trailer crowd is not afflicted with the same malidy as the Ford VS. Chevy Vs. Dodge crowd (for example).
There are very few choices in appliances and off the shelf components for high end trailers (especialy in the 60') so most of the questions and discussions apply.
Like how do I fit a new 12"X12" Attwood HW heater in the 12"X20" hole where the old Bowen used to be and not look like a hack job?
Or how do I light the fridge without loosing my eyebrows?

Hopefully, they've been on the road for a couple of months now, maybe they can drop by and let us know how it's working out. I know Rich Luhr uses Internet In Motion for his trailer, and he is able to get connected almost everywhere. If there is a Camping World nearby, they advertise as being able to install the system, it may be worth checking out, even if you put the stuff in yourself.
BTW, I had to install a water heater in place of the huge original, and it does look like a hack job, but at least it doesn't leak .
And, a piezo ignitor is great for avoiding the Telly Savalas look...

I've found the Verizon data service to be very good now. I have the card that goes in the slot in the side of your computer. If you are on the 3g network, it is about as fast as DSL. If you are mostly camping near major roads this might work well for you.
I also tried Cingular for data - useless!
I have found that in most cases the wireless offered at camping places has been slow or not working at all. My guess is that it is not a high priority.
There's always Starbocks!

A possibility to consider, when running 120v wiring through the aluminum ribs, is the use of type AC aluminum armored cable. It eliminates the need for bushings. I don't believe that any of the 120v wiring on my trailer runs through the ribs -- it's all run through the cabinets with the occasional vertical run up between ribs where necessary.
