Door locks and keys

I have one key (kinda old and worn) to the door lock. However, it is a Ford motor key. As in a car door key.

Why would the lock mechanism be compatible with a car door key blank?

Okay, that's not as important as where do I go to find a similar style blank to have a new key made? Home Depot certainly couldn't. Would this be something your basic locksmith could handle?

Can't upload photos, my quota is exceeded. Silly me! However, I did want to get this question out there so it would stop running around in my brain.

I would think a locksmith can handle your key problem. That is weird for your trailer to use a ford key though, you should have a Bargman l100 or l200 lock on your trailer.
Pictures would help for sure.

As I sit here with 4 keys around my neck (for fear of locking myself out of the trailer), I could see why a PO might have had the lock set to match his/her car keys (presumably a Ford). I'd love to have all the locks on the AS use a single key and if it happened to be the same one that starts my truck - all the better!!

Sounds like the answer is "locksmith." If it were an Airstream, you can (and I have done so) get key blanks from the factory and then a local key maker can duplicate them ... but in your case, no idea.

I installed a deadbolt lock on mine. Gives the extra protection from coming open going down the road too. It's an easy project since the door has wood around edges inside the metal cladding. A hole saw will go right thru the thin metal.

I have had many Trailers over the years. One, and I can't remember which, had the same blank issue, a Ford door lock key. My locksmith, in business since the dark ages, said they had run into that a few times. They also said the blank was very hard to come by, but they either had one or got one, again, I can't remember the details now. The words "Ford door key" clicked a long forgotten memory.

You may need a very good old line locksmith to help you out.

The Bargman L100/200 lock key can use a Ford blank. I bet if you do a search within the forum you will get the Ford blank number. This was also the case for the newer version of the Bargman L-66. I know this because I had some keys made using the Ford key blank.

I went to a locksmith years ago for a couple extra keys for my 69 ambassador.

The blank he used was a Ford blank and he filed a small amount off the top and they worked fine,
.
Availability of the blanks for some of the brands of locks back then is a problem

Thanks everyone so much. Off to the locksmith it is....

And, I'll also see about installing a deadbolt.

For those who said pictures of the lock would be helpful, I think I can now manage that....

That's a very cool lock unlike anything I've seen although it does look similar to the Barman L200.
I looked on ebay for Ford key blanks and found these. Hope it helps.

Link worked perfectly, thank you!! Never even thought about looking on eBay.

I love the lock and am very reluctant to give it up so that's not going to happen.

It's nice to find out I've got other options.

I was a locksmith for 25 years. I owned my own company and I specialized in automotive for many of those years among many other things. I sold my company in 08 but I made many many thousands of Ford keys but not for any trailer. Off the top of my head I remember some Bargman keyways being similar to the old Ford 5 pin key but I never used them. I would search and find the right Bargman key and use it. Somewhere along the line someone filed down the incorrect blank(the Ford key) and confused everyone from that point on. Go to a long established locksmith with good customer service preferably an ALOA locksmith who is certified and take your outside handle in or the trailer and have them make the right key copy for the lock. I carried Bargman blanks but honestly it's ok to use the Ford blank as long as it goes in and out smoothly. The wrong blank can damage the lock though if its ill fitting. A good locksmith will have the Bargman or find it for you.

Ok I just researched a little and the reason it's a Ford key is because the cylinder in your lock was made by Hurd and they also made Ford locks. They may have used the same keyway or similar at the time and then they just put a different head shape on the key for the trailer lock. Anyway, looks like vintage trailer supply has the blanks and then take them to a good locksmith and have it duplicated( I would still take the lock and trailer with you if possible) because if it was me doing it I would try Bargman blanks until one goes in and out smoothly then copy it.

We wanted an extra key or two for our 2017 FC 26U. When we picked up the trailer in March in Ft Myers, FL they didn't have the blanks we needed. I checked with them again yesterday and still no key blanks. But, Mike in the parts dept. at North Trail RV said he would check other sources. In a couple hours he called back and had a source and a part number!!!! I'm getting my blanks from Airstream Supply which I think is also Silver Trailer Supply. They are in Salt Lake City, UT. The key blank part number is 381547-102. They are less than $4 each. Kudos to Mike in parts at North Trail RV, Ft Myers, FL!!
