Curtis Wright 1948

In my travels I came across a 1948 Curtis Wright.
I don't know much about the trailer.
I don't know how to value it. What would be a good purchase price?
The trailer would need a complete rebuild.
Does it have a tube frame or ladder frame?
Any other information about this type of trailer would be helpful.

Thanks

Hi Captain,

A '48 would "most likely" have a pipe frame that should be visible sticking out at both ends of the trailer. It should be about 4" in diameter, and is pretty hard to overlook. I say "most likely" because I have a very unusual '48 CW that is 28 feet long, and built on a ladder frame that appears to be original. I have never heard of another like it except perhaps as possibly referenced in old print advertising.

I don't think many CW's were built in '48, since this followed the year of Wally Byam's departure, and preceded the sale to the guys that renamed it "Silver Streak". I've always surmised that my trailer might possibly have been a prototype (leftover from his short stay with CW) for Wally's later Airstream "Whirlwind", that was similar in dimension, though built on a pipe frame. Only two are known to exist. One is at the Airstream factory, and the other is owned by a friend who has it hidden in the California desert.

Nice find. Your looking at it from the wrong end, like most people do. It is not what you can drag it home for....it is, most importantly, what you will have to do to get it to the final condition you want. That means time, money, space, etc. Lots of all of those. If you spend a lot for it, or a little, remember this.....the minute you put the first tool to it for your planned rebuild, the value plummets until you have made substantial progress (almost finished.)
