Oops. My text got overwritten by the picture. Anyway, TCT member bought this trailer for less than $500 and removed it from a yard in Chatsworth CA.

Hawley Bowlus

Hello fellow Streamers. Just a bit of trivia about Bowlus.
Wm Hawley Bowlus was also a glider/sailplane builder. He manufactured both a finished plane or kits. When I was a youngster in California, a friend and I bought a lightly crashed Bowlus BA-100 and rebuilt it and towed it aloft with my dads Desoto and that where I learned to fly.
I have read that Bowlus was also instrumental in helping Bynum and the early airstreams. Bowlus was very visionary

The earliest designer of the iconic aerodynamic travel trailer using aircraft technology and riveted aluminum was in fact Hawley Bowlus.

Additional information about this is seen in the AirForums' thread, "Jay Leno tours the new Land Yacht..."

I believe that what they said about this trailer, was that someone bought a house in Chatsworth from an estate and this was in the yard. The former homeowners knew Hawley Bowlus and the trailer was built right in Chatsworth. The new homeowner priced it low because it was an "eyesore". The trailer has it's original interior but is in rough shape. It was saved from thescrapyard by an Airstreamer, thank goodness!

You should also know that the ghost of Harley Bowlus walks again: http://www.bowlusroadchief.com

Absolutely beautiful product. I just wish the toilet wasn't a cassette and instead used a proper blackwater tank. There are many things I will carry and dump by hand, but a sloshing honey bucket isn't one of them. <sigh>

The ghost of William Hawley Bowlus...

"William Hawley Bowlus (May 8, 1896 - August 27, 1967)... is most widely known for his key role in the design of Airstream travel trailers, which followed his prior famed work as the Superintendent of Construction on Charles Lindbergh's aircraft, the Spirit of St. Louis." (Built in San Diego in 1927.)

The ghost of Airstream future...

At 2:49 in this video, Bob Wheeler, President and CEO of Airstream, Inc., states, "... the earliest designer of the Airstream [type] trailer was a guy named Hawley Bowlus, who also designed the Spirit of St. Louis...".

Looked pretty neat (http://www.bowlusroadchief.com/). However, I agree Silvery Moon about the toilet. The wife's two requirements: A/C and runnign water. The Road Chief seems like the ultra light backpacking version of the Airstream.

My wife would have liked a bathtub option in our Airstream seen in the video. The driving test in the video is crazy. LOL The vintage video brings back memories of when I was a kid at my Grandparents watching the old TV shows (no HBO back then).
