Backroads Double Take

Cross posted from On the road...

My husband and I were coming home on the backroads of piedmont NC on Sunday, after a reconnaissance trip to Hanging Rock State Park to scout potential camping sites, when we drove by this!

https://flic.kr/s/aHskAViVS9 (Sorry to make you link out, but I could not for the life of me figure out how to get the pictures right side up!)

I called to my husband, "It's an Avion!!" and slowed a little but kept on going. Then the most amazing thing happened. He said, "I didn't really get to see it. Why don't you go back." So of course I found the next pull out and back we went. This old lady was sitting at a closed up gas station and I was honestly a little afraid someone was going to come over with a shotgun and ask me what I was doing taking pictures. There was still a Florida license plate on the back, but the last registration sticker was for 1995. I sure hope someone finds her and gives her a new lease on life so she doesn't just rust/corrode away on the side of the road watching others go by and wishing she was on the road with them.

Anyone looking for a project?

Thanks for posting those. We see trailers in fields, yards, everywhere but are usually towing so can't easily stop to get pics.

I do so love the end caps on the older Avions and Travelux trailers. All those panels.....

All those stickers on the back window. Lives lived, adventures had, hopes held. Very poignant.

The license plate is from the Ft. Lauderdale area.

Spare tire cover says "Big Apple". Wondering if someone retired to Florida from New York and traveled around. Maybe one or both went to their final reward and now it's just sitting there. I'm sure there's an interesting story behind it, judging from all the stickers.

Every decaying trailer has a story, I wish they would provide a log book that could be left for others. I have one in my AS.

Thanks for posting the pics.

Quite! I saw all those stickers and though what a story this trailer could tell!

If there had been anyone around I might have asked some questions. It just seemed so sad sitting there abandoned in what looked like an abandoned gas station on the side of the road. I love the idea of a log book, it can be as much for those who come after us as it is a way to relive our own travels.
