'78 Travelux 21'

Hi everyone, I posted my intro in the new member area back in Feb. Introducing myself and the trailer I just purchased.
http://www.airforums.com/forums/f368...ux-101733.html

Well as I said in the intro, the trailer has been in its present location for some 20 years and I wont be able to get it out till the snow is all gone. I visited it last week to take off the wheels to have new tires installed on the rims to be ready for the move. It was a good day! I thought things would be all seized up, I took my torch, penetrating oil and a long bar to get lost of leverage on the wheel nuts to break them loose. Well to my surprise I didnt need the bar, torch or oil, they broke loose like they were happy to see someone was paying attention to it finally. So the wheels are home to be cleaned up and painted then I'll install the new tires.

Here are some photos of it in it's natural state for the past 20 years, kind of peaceful. But boy do I have a lot of work ahead of me to bring this Travelux back to life.

It sure looks longer than a 21'. I hope you have a lot of fun with it, and are able to restore that relatively rare unit.

Looks like a neat project. Are you going to do a shell off or try and fix the soft spots and keep the interior intact? Take more pix so we all can follow along and to document your progress. These projects tend to take way more time than you can ever imagine and many times it helps to have pictures to refer back to. Good luck.

The stock rims & tires on this Travelux are; Goodyear H78x15.
So I'm putting on a set of wide whitewalls and I have a set of smoothy Moon caps for them already. I'll be striping the rims this weekend and then getting them painted black. I'll post a photo when they're done.

btw, this Travelux came from your area, Pefferlaw

Well I finally got the her home, (Friday). It was a three hour drive from my house to the property where it been for the past twenty years and all went very well.

I took off all the wheel drums and repacked the bearing, and to my surprise there was very little rust on the brake components. I bolted on the rims with the new tires and hooked up a taillight system I made to bolt on the bumper, (because I wasn't relying on the lights or wiring working).

The trailer pulled beautifully for the ride home with no issues at all. My first stop was at a car wash and treated it to a good scrubbing and did it ever come up nice.

Today I went right to cleaning the inside, took some photos (which I'll have to post later) and looked to see how much water damage there really is.... Well, it's very wet and a fair bit of rot in the fridge area and on the floor below both roof vents. I opened up the floor at the soft spots and the insulation is socked as well. So I'm going to completely remove the interior and floor in order to see how the frame is.

I hope I haven't bitten off more than I can handle.

Worked on removing the interior all day Sunday and made some good progress. So, yes there is lots of work ahead, the floor has to completely replaced and who knows what I'll find under that.

Skip,
I'm lucky I got the bike done when I did. Work got so busy I haven't had much time for the trailer or the bike. But man the bike going to look great on the back of this Travelux when I get it done. I already have Red trim molding to replace the blue.

Here's an update on the Travelux.
I got all the interior panels out along with the old moldy mouse infested insulation. Have started finding and sealing all water leaks, most of the leaks were at the end cap seams and the two top seams. Other spots as usual are around the windows, taillights, out side outlet and frame where the tongue and bumper meet the body panels. Half of the floor has been remove and my frame looks OK! Just needs a good cleaning and then seal it with Por15.

Oh ya and I've started striping the white paint off the shell I'm gona love this when its all polished.

Here's a few photos

My 20'er appears as if they used plasticoat on only some of the panels. It's kind of weird like they got to the end of the production line and substituted one kind of panel for the other. Now I have to strip the 4 panels that are coated and finish polishing.

Chrome plating

I just got back my curb side handle/outdoor light and BARGMAN water filler port back from being stripped and re-plated. WoW they look great and I fitted a vintage patterned red glass lens. When it's lite you can see the etched pattern.

Going to spend a day working on this baby this weekend.

Looks great!

I just cleaned mine and painted them...never thought of getting them replated. Was it expensive? My door hinge is in rough shape. That would be a great option.

Thanks
JOn

Yes it was a bit expensive for the two pieces but other than the hinge there isn't any other parts to be chromed.
Ya, my hinge is rough too, not sure how to tackle that yet. I need to get the screen door off and have the joints re-welded the think about getting that hinge off.

Finally took some time to work on the trailer the past weekend. I had previously got to the point of having the original floor competently taken out along with all the old insulation. What a mess! The frame is in really good condition so I'll be water/sand blasting it next weekend then after it's dry I'm using a product called DOM 16, similar to PRO 15 but half the cost. From all I've read about both products, they both have there pros and cons.

I've also spent a little time here and there stripping the paint off the exterior of this baby. I'm about half way there.
Replaced all the 110v wiring with new and new outlet and switches.
