'68 Avion TC , the new project

Well I've wanted one of these almost as long as I've wanted an Airstream . Finally found one close enough and not totally done in . Hoping to have it campable for next season . If anyone has one of these or has knowledge of them , I can use all the help I can get . Peliminary inspection looks pretty good . The structure looks to be sound , floor and wings . The frig , water heater ,furnace and stove all work . Haven't checked the water system yet but the pump runs . It also has a SS water tank , don't think it's original . The 12v electric is a snake pit , someone was very creative . The exterior skin I would call excellent for 40 yrs old , 2 small dents . The top cover for the fridge vent is missing as is the door for the water heater . Other than that the unit is very complete , down to the original paper work .
Here are some pics of the as-is condition

That is one neat camper. Congrats on your great find.
I would assume that the 12V electrical is similar to that of a trailer, and similarly easy to repair. It looks like it could be fully self contained with very little effort.
Nice!

Thumbs up Wow! Totally cool

Very cool truck camper! Looks to be in wicked good shape too. I hope to get to see it at one of our events sometime next year.

Ticki2 - thats a nice truck camper - Good find!

Excella CM - I think a vintage Jeep J4000 Camper Special would look a little better than the IH with the Avion

That would really make it complete wouldn't it . A few years back I had a fairly decent '68 GMC 4x4 . DW doesn't always share my enthusiasm for collectibles , tends to call it junk , so it would be wise to go slow . She does enjoy it when it's finished though , so I have a chance .

A really nice find. I owned one of these for a few years too. It's a sturdy, well built camper.

My guess is it was for fishing poles , or possibly canopy supports .

This afternoon had a chance to look into the water system . After changing some nasty looking tubing around the water pump ( everything else is copper) I turned the city water on . Great suprise , no leaks . Next I filled the tank and checked the 12v side , again no leaks . This is going way to good , getting nervous. Haven't checked the tolet yet , maybe tomorrow . The back bolt seems to be loose but I have no clue how to access . It's an Aqua-majic , no numbers or other names ,model 02400b , if anyone has any ideas .

ticki2, Are you missing the roof top part of the fridge vent? You may be able to use a modern day type vent cover. Try Ventline part #'s for a 5" x 18" (31-1628), 5" x 20" (31-1664), or a 5" x 24" (31-8295). Measure the top base where the cap would mount.

Well the sh.. hit the wall today , no water at the toilet . Finally found the other bolt and out she comes . Also discovered some cracks in the tank top where the flange screws in , so out it comes . Very simple set up , comes out from the top . Now I need to find someone to do some plastic welding or learn how , the joys of being in the sticks . I've read several threads on the subject and it seems very do-able , time will tell . Since I had the access panel of the bottom of the tail section I took some measurements and it looks like I can squease a 10gal gray tank in there . I tried to tell Molly this an Avion bottle but she insisted it was an Avon bottle

'72 Cayo C-11

As said in my PM, I'm familiar w/ that tank, having the identical one on a '72 Cayo C-11. Couldn't find a replacement tank with the right dimensions, so had the cracked tank "welded" at a shop specializing in that stuff. Re. the door for your water heating unit, that shouldn't be too tough to replace, as the unit itself isn't specific to Avions or your camper, i.e., doors of appropriate dimension (albeit not of anodized aluminum) should be available. I, too, replaced the vent cap with the appropriate size from an on-line store.

As for a gray water holding tank, I've found that in use, I usually don't hold that water, but let it flow unrestricted outside, with this being the case even after increasing holding capacity by replacing the piping w/ larger diameter stuff. You're right about how high the unit is off the ground, so a few years ago I put on a 3 step folding unit that helps entrance/exit greatly. Might add that, in addition, I acquired and a attached a StableLift, so once I'm at a site, I take the camper off my truck and set it on the ground at a height much lower than when on my truck.

Swinginfish , first off , welcome to the alum club and the forums . It sounds like yours is already in use , can't waite . We all love pictures here so if you have some please post , even the nasty ones . Most places here in the East we can no longer dump gray water so I need some capacity for traveling and quick overnights. Do you still have the original jacks that came with the camper . I'm looking for one more to have a 4 jack system , I have some modifications in mind. I like the outdoor shower idea , where did you put it?
