A lot of time after cleaning up corrosion you can alodine, acid etch and then prime, it's not really necessary on an Airstream especially if you are going to shoot an assembly back together wet. A faying surface seal is just sealing between two mating surfaces. Filing or polishing the edges is a way to prevent corrosion, I use a blue roloc surface conditioning disc as it is faster. An edge does not need to be separately sealed after a wet install, you should have some sealant extrude out that will require cleanup anyway.

I bet your brother has a lot of experience behind a bucking bar in your Globetrotter. You guys should invent a bucking bar holder that can be adjusted to fit tight over the hole, or holes that are to receive a solid rivet. The device would provide an adjustable amount of push on the bar so the rivet would get squished in place.

You are right if you have access with your hand. Or is your "right hand man" your brother?

Why don't you invent a blind rivet that is just as strong as a bucked rivet, and doesn't leak. Olympic tri fold rivets aren't the answer. Think of all the manpower Airstream would save. And all those folks building experimental aircraft in their garages. You would make a fortune. Get Aerowood rivets, they are the best.

Well David there is a blind rivets that is stronger then the solids Airstream uses, it's called a CherryMax but it would be cost prohibited to use them.

Progress pictures are of the installed fridge access door and the right side lower skin.

FWIW, if I ever decide to reskin the interior of another Airstream, I give permission to cut me deep and bleed me out, it's not really hard to do but it is just taking FOREVER!!! Click image for larger version

Kip,

Maybe I missed it in a previous comment, but what kind of rivets are you using to install your interior skin?

Mine was originally installed with pop rivets but yours look a bit larger.

thanks

The panels are all held on with 10-32 bolts with nutplates riveted to the frames and stringers. They are all placed to mount interior components, like the walls, galley, water lines etc. For the hardware that is exposed I am using hex drive washer head 10-32 stainless steel screws. I will be using some pop rivets on the panel seams but absolutely no sheet metal screws throughout.

Progress Report today, I fabricated and installed mounts for the fridge exhaust fans. I cracked one of the pieces while stretching it, but it won't matter. I briefly though about making another but it just doesn't matter. It was the second radius that I stretched and I tried to cut a corner. The first radius I sanded the stretcher marks out and annealed it halfway there, I didn't on the second. I did on the 3rd and 4th radius. Oh well just me and the forum know I cracked it. Oh by the way David, I used CherryMax blind rivets to shoot the pieces on. I couldn't find my long #4 offset rivet set to shoot solids. I must have loaned it out at sometime and never got it back. Maybe Zep knows where it is. Or maybe it will show up in the kitchen utility drawer.

Did you use a torch or a heat gun to anneal the radii?

Thanks
Mike

Heat gun, don't know exactly how well it worked, but it worked in my mind. Stretching is harder to do then shrinking
