You are building one stout Globetrotter. You will be able to pull it up low maintenance Forest Service roads like the ones I used to ride my ATV on. They are slightly better than an old dry creek bottom, but not much. You can pull up a mountain as a hunting base camp. I don't pull my Airstream down very rough roads as I feel it will just shake apart. Yours will certainly won't do that.

That was the intent of the build, I've already pulled it up a lot of forest service roads. The main thing I worry about is meeting another trailer on the narrow roads. It tests your backing skills. I have meet others that can't back up their rigs, that always irritates me. Why are they there if they can't back it up, or their trailer is wider then the mirrors on their tow vehicle and they can't see down the sides to back up. Rant rant rant.

On narrow ATV trails, the climbing ATV has the right away. When pulling the ATV trailer down a Forest Service "road" to head home, we usually could find a spot wide enough to clear the climbing vehicle. I had to fold my truck's mirrors in. Quite frankly, the "corner cutters" in our neighborhood frighten me. Many of our sharp corners are blind due to the trees. So approaching a curve can sometimes find an oncoming vehicle encroaching in my lane. Big surprise! It is so prevalent that the double yellow painted lines on the blacktop are worn off in the corners. I take it slow and easy up my switchbacks.

Rant, rant, rant

Progress update

Finished the wiring, ran the air conditioner drain through the floor. Installed many many nutplates so the side panel so screws don't hit the wiring. Trimmed up and installed the left side panel. Made most of the cutouts but still need to do cut out for one 110 volt box and the left side grey tank/sink vent. Click image for larger version

Looks great as usual. What tool do you use to make the cutouts look so good and positioned correctly?

Maybe it is too hot to work inside your trailer. Or maybe you rigged a 30 amp circuit to run that new AC to keep you cool.

The AC circuit breaker box is installed, so the air conditioner does work. I couldn't work in there without it. So far only the main 30 amp and the air conditioner 20 amp are installed. As far as my cutouts, I us a variety of methods to locate them from a tape measure, templates, etc. I use a 90° die grinder with cut off wheels, sanding discs, drum sanders for the majority, and what ever works for the job for the rest

Glad you are chillin in your Globetrotter. Cooler weather is coming they say, but what do they know. Thanks for the description of your techniques to locate and then cut an opening in a big sheet of aluminum. The Airstream factory uses a CNC mill to cut holes in sheet aluminum. I was guessing you had one of those too. I put a side cutting metal bit in my RotoZip that kinda works for small jobs. But the tool needs a "fence" otherwise it will take off like it had a mind of its own.

I've tried various router bits and routers, but I just didn't have the control like I do with a high speed cutoff blade on a 90° die grinder.

OK, I woulda been quicker on the draw, but I was in the expiry dog house and then had to drive to Myrtle Beach.

My overhead comes out 17-3/8" and the face tilts forward at 15 degrees.

Kip,

What size holes are you drilling in your frames to run your wires?

It depends on the size of the wire. I have several sizes of grommets. Most were 9/16" OD or smaller. There are a few however that are 3/4" OD. I ordered all of my grommets from McMaster Carr. I used more then I though I'd need, on the two that I used the most I ordered a 100 count bag. The 9/16" OD with a 7/16" ID is what I used the most of. It seemed I was always ordering another size. Shipping got to be more expensive then the o rings themselves. For some reason, some sizes were quit a bit more expensive then others, hence the reason I bought 7/16" ID instead of 1/2" ID. I just received, hopefully my last shipment of O-Rings last Friday. I needed 3 that would go in 1/8" material while all the rest were for 1/16" material. I paid particular attention to the OD size so I could keep the holes size through the frames the smallest possible. I haven't added it up, and I I most likely won't, how much I spent on grommets. Over a hundred probably.

Since I was keeping the old inside skins in my '77 Safari, I had a lots of odd holes. I wound up 3D printing grommets for them, maybe a total of 40 or so. Some were even rectangular or elliptical to fit. And I could have a new one in 20 minutes (including design time).

* just another advert for the usefulness of 3D printers...

Update, if any one actually follows this thread other then David and Zep. Left side lower panel is installed, heater has been located and intake and exhaust tubes mount has been installed. The galley sink/gray water vent is installed with a home made ABS adapter to take it to the tanks. The vent is my never leak design. Click image for larger version
