No, I used PRC 1422 B 1/2, it's an aircraft fuel tank sealant

I've still have to add the clips that tie the stringers to the frames..

I also added some rivets to the side skin to frames. The 4" spacing was just to wide for me. I went with 6-8D spacing.Click image for larger version

I'm also contemplating not putting the molding back on and just installing the badging. What do you all think?

I was up at Luke's place picking up a pair of axles today. We spent quite a bit of time talking about you and your famous Globetrotter. I can't repeat it here. But Luke does say hi.

The Globetrotter is just a outlet for my OCD.....
I do kinda miss the aircraft structural work, it was more challenging then the Airstream.

I'm looking at the fan mount in post 665 and comparing it to the a/c mount in 685. I don't see any nutplates in the a/c mount and the welded corners caught me by surprise. Did you do the welding or take it to a local shop?

The A/C doesn't require any nut plates to mount. I haven't unpacked the A/C yet, but it's my understanding that it just clamps on. I'm not quit ready to install The air conditioner yet so I just have an aluminum panel taped on the opening. I'm not sure how to get the A/C unit on top yet, But leaning towards an inclined plane and several friends.

I had the frame corners welded up at a local shop. It would be nice to have a tig welder but I wouldn't use it enough to justify the expense..

My Sovereign friend and I installed a new AC on his trailer last August. We placed a 6x6 wood beam about 6' long behind the awning roll, and then we used a piece of 3/4 plywood as a work platform on top of the 6x6. The two of us were able to lift the heavy ac up to the plywood platform using my cheap scaffolding and then over to the 14x14 hole. Our AC mount was factory, not anything as good as yours. You are right, just set the AC on your mount, then position the underside piece and 4 bolts clamps the ac down tight. It seems like a pretty good way to do it.

That's my recollection regarding two of my 70's A/Cs. Funny I had forgotten that. I still have one that needs better support stringers, now that you mention it.

.
By the way, I used two ladders, one on each side with a foam pad under each ladder to protect the shell. I lashed the ladders together at the top and at the bottom so they wouldn't spread eagle on me. I put a 2x10 across the top rungs of the two ladders, then slid the A/C up one ladder and had a buddy at the top help get it up on the 2x10. Went slow, worked great.

Don't be dumb and put the ladders on either side of the A/C opening, put them about 2' one way or the other. Ask me how I know.

Removed awning rail because water leaked between it and the skin with our old vintage awning. I found corrosion on the skin after cleaning up all the packed in dirt from 1971 on. Cleaned up corrosion and got the rail ready for reinstallation. I added a few extra rivets while I was at it. Click image for larger version

Any thoughts of building/selling these frames? Might offset the cost of that TIG that you want..

Aerowood,

What was your process for cleaning up the corrosion? Did you coat it after? Would you use the same process for any areas on the exterior that are "exposed" (because the are under the rail will be covered).,

thank you

Interesting, but no I have not thought of selling the frames. The welding was expensive and I don't think folks would be willing to pay the price I would have to charge to make it worth my time. The profit margin would be pretty low. Besides the frame, you would need a shrinker stretcher to make the angle that interfaces with the trailer top radius and the welded frame. The stringers also do not have 90° angles on them. If I remember one angle was 99° and the other was 81°, again to match the vertical leg of the welded frame and the curve of the trailer skin.

If you are interested in this I could bend up the frame angles and you could get them welded, but again it depends on the trailer year for the stringer angles and the radiused angles. Why don't you just stop my and we can make the pieces, I'm sure it's not that far out of your way to come to Colorado.

I used a 90° die grinder with a 3" blue roloc surface conditioning disc to clean up the corrosion. It was worse on the top edge area. I did not coat it as I will seal the awning rail down with a faying surface seal when I rivet it back down. My brother is coming over Tuesday to buck the rivets. It's supposed to rain/snow Thursday so I need to get it shot back together.

As far as exposed areas I would try a course compound on those areas during polishing.

Thanks, maybe on my next trailer, if I can survive this build! Besides, my roof installs are all complete. I used my HF shrinker/stretcher to build internal roof supports for the compressor end of the A/C.; For the 14x14 entry point, I bought a frame from OODM. It looks like they cut up a rib for the roof curve. It was a little funky, putting it in, but it works well as far as allowing me to tighten the 4 AC bolts, without flattening the roof curve. It is definitely not in the same league as your frame...but it was only $29, so I am not complaining.

I might take you up on stopping by. I will be heading West next spring, once the trailer is complete. Your location is listed in the Airforums Hall of Fame/Legends tour

Before I had a shrinker, I mounted my a/c using two shaped 2x4s as the cross stringers. They provided good support for the exterior and interior curves and definitely allowed me to tighten the a/c bolts.

Can I have the link to the Airforums Hall of Fame/Legends tour, please?
