Kip, I just wanted to tell you that you are going to have one fine Globetrotter. I have been reading about your trailer for over a year and I am still blown away. You are to be commended for your incredible work. If you ever decide that you want a little bigger trailer, please let me know. Your trailer would be worth just about any price. All the best, Kenny

Man, you sure have some luck, working at a place where you have access to a full-blown shop, even equipped with a C&C, that you get to use for your personal projects when times are quiet.

It does have it's advantages. I did have to buy my own aluminum though. We just don't use much of the thinner aluminum that is used on Airstreams. I had to make a pump rack for the GV last week and it was all made out of 6061-T6 .125 with 1/2" radius on the bends. Thank god for our CNC pressbrake for those jobs.

What a pleasure this thread is to read! Kip, judging by the backyard shot -- and the home interior work -- it looks as though you're always doing something . . with technical and aesthetic skill. I sure admire it all.

Arvada is where an aunt & uncle of mine have lived 50-years, Leadville is where some now-distant ancestors lived, and my son is a USMC "J" Model 130 driver. Lot's of nice reminders in the background of this entire thread.

Hey Kip, Again it is a pleasure to watch you redo your trailer. You are a very talented guy. Although I have a '65 Globe and only one brake/taillight and one reflector, I am also thinking of switching to led. I didn't get your message as to the type (manufacture) of your led's.Thanks, Kenny

Hey Kip, I finished the install of led tail lights with an aluminum ring that I had machined. It came out great. I would like to have a license plate bracket made like to yours. The old bracket just doesn't look so good. Could you give me your dimensions and the type of aluminum used ? You do such beautiful work. Thanks for your inspiration. Kenny

I made the bracket all out of 6061-T6. The plate is .125" thick and is the same size as a licence plate plus an inch or so taller (I use the TLAR method,"that looks about right"). The top piece is 1.5" diameter tubing that I cut a slice off one side, no dimension just cut off a piece and then put on a mill to straighten and clean up. I then flattened one edge and riveted it to the plate. The standoffs are .375" X 750". I used this because it was what I had. I ordered a big chunk of it because I use it for slides in my table saw mitre slot. I drilled the holes in the plate to match the dimensions of a licence plate and aligned the standoffs to those holes. There are two sets of holes, the first to mount the bracket to the trailer and a second that have Keenserts installed to mount the licence plate to the bracket.

I decided to add an additional stop light strip to the back of the GT. I picked up the light bar but it did not have that "finished look" to it, so I made an aluminum channel for it to nest into. I think it looks better in the channel. I just have to decide if I,m going to install it above or below the rear window. What do you guys think, above or below?

I think I would go below the window. The area between the window and the running lights is small to begin with and above the window would prevent you from adding an awning in the future. BTW, this is one of my favorite threads to follow. You are doing a fantastic job on your trailer.

How about mounted inside the trailer at the top of the window. That space just below the bathroom cabinet. No holes on the exterior and it would light up the entire back window when brakes are applied. You could even mount it on a hinge to swing in place while in driving. That way it will not obstruct window opening while camping.

That is an idea to think about, but that is going to be a dedicated bed area and my wife might not like it to be a red light district.

Not sure yet, I'll be spending alot of time in either Vancouver BC or Edmonton AB real soon, so not quite sure on what my schedule is going to be just yet. You can come down from the mountain and visit anytime. I always try to keep a few cold ones in the shop fridge

Hey Kip, Very nice touch. I would also say that below the window above the license plate bracket, on the outside. That would be about eye level for safety. I can't wait to see what you do to the inside. All the best, Kenny

I reworked all the emblems while the weather is cold to keep at it. They were corroded so I sandblasted them with a fine silica first and then cleaned up the rough casting edges that were on the landyacht emblems. I then epoxy primed the recessed areas and then painted the lettering. After it had dried a couple of days I sanded off the excess black paint. I think they turned out pretty good. I still have to wet sand with 600 and clear coat.

Hey, Kip! GREAT JOB!! Jim and I met you at the Restoration rally in April '08 in Albq. Your beautiful wife and I spent some time in town and we all enjoyed your hands-on rivet class! We're happy to see the progress you've made on your coach. It's really coming together nicely! I'm about a journeyman bucker at this point. We have replaced practically all of the skin on our '54 Flying Cloud. My goal is to become Head Riveter! Hope all is well with you and yours! Keep up the excellent work!
