Hint:The primates that gave their name to two lava tubes found along this trail weren't monkeys-they were members of a 1950s outdoor club who found and explored the tubes.

Re: 1614

Although I've never been there myself( I've thought about it many times), I'm pretty sure you are in the area of the lava tubes known as Ape Caves on the lower Southern flanks of Mt St Helens. The miners and prospectors in the area in the 1800's and early 20th century claim to have had many encounters with sasquatches and said they lived in Ape Caves. My believe is that the "Cave Apes" climbers were parlaying on these legends rather the being the original "namers" of the cave.

I was lucky enough to stand on the summit of Mt St Helens while it was still there. It was the summer of 1960, IIRC.

The original photos were castings of downed trees covered with lava. The lava cooled before the trees burned out. It was an old flow as were the lava tubes. Longest lava tube in in the US (or somewhere) 2 1/2 miles. Yes, in the area of St. Helens. Here's another.

Here's a link to good info on Ape Caves.

I'm curious when your pics where taken.

We went camping many times at Spirit Lake when it was a beautiful lush green campground and sandy beach. Now that we're back in Washington, I need to make a trip down there and see what it looks like now.

I was sitting on my deck in Enumclaw, WA looking that direction when the mountain exploded. It was quite a display and quite a shock. Although we could not actually see the mountain, what was going on right above it was amazing

The visitor center at Johnson Ridge has an excellent program documenting the pretty amazing recovery after the big blow

#1630 is definitely Monticello. Jefferson was an avid gardener, in an age when everyone had a garden--or no veggies to eat. It was before canned or frozen was invented.

There are a few motor cars. Fire engines and I believe a couple other emergency official vehicles.

Monticello is correct. This picture was taken in December but I had the chance to also visit in spring and it is even more beautiful then
