I don't know where it is, but I think it a railroad loop. It is a way to gain altitude in a confined space. If that is what it is, it is not the only one in the US. There is one in Georgetown, CO. If that's not what it is then never mind..

Yes, it is the Tehachapi Loop in California, and I read it was the only one in the US. It's close to Hwy 58 between Bakersfield and Mojave, California.

Just Googled the Georgetown Loop, and found out it's a narrow gauge railroad used only for tourism at this time.

"The Tehachapi Loop is a 0.73-mile (1.17 km) long 'spiral', or helix, on the Union Pacific Railroad line through Tehachapi Pass, of the Tehachapi Mountains in Kern County, south-central California. The line connects Bakersfield and the San Joaquin Valley to Mojave in the Mojave Desert. Seeing a daily average of almost 40 trains, the line is one of the busiest single-track mainlines in the world."

Where Is This?

Hi Steve,
Good time...thanks for the road trip & side trip. Are you camping in the area? Drove through Mohave several years ago & was somewhat eerie as the last 12-14 hr. day of three day trip east to west. We had no time for side trips as we were moving daughter to CA for her new career right out of college. Need to spend more time out westNeed to redo and enjoy the journey next time.

No, we were out that way in June, and I had heard about the loop and wanted to stop and see it since I am sort of a train buff. The road that will get you to the place where I took the picture is one that I would not recommend taking a trailer on, especially a large trailer. However, it's one of those deals where once you get started, you must continue on because there is no place to turn around, at all. Here's us parked on the side of that road at the overview area.

Sorry to confuse you Jim. That was just the file name Heather had for that series of photos.
We were going from BC to Ontario, via the US #90 that trip and yes that is the rest stop in Chamerlain. (Post @ 1395) You have a good eye and much travel experience Jim.

You got it! By the way, I've never seen scorpions this far north in Utah.

Google scorpion range or something similar. You will be surprised where some of the smaller species are and we apparently seldom see them.

You are right, of course. I've seen plenty in southern Utah but just never as far north as Salt Lake City. But I know they are around. I just have to remember to shake out my backpacking boots each morning! And this is the only "scorpion warning sign" I've seen in Utah.

The person under the shelter in the picture is looking, through field glasses, at two air force blimps (can't see them in the picture) tethered off to the north over the Hill Field bombing range.

New Season

Get your 2014 photos ready for the NEW 2014 season of "Where Is This?" starting November 1st on this channel!

Stay tuned.

Just for a primer, I came across this on the net and will post it for your enjoyment. We have been in this area in 2011, visited the rock sculptures, but did not take this route.
