Where Is This?

Right again.

I was absolutely amazed by the size of the Red Cedars. Cedar trees around here are puny by comparsion. The other northwest tree I did not know was a giant was Douglas Fir.

This tree is the largest in the world of its species. It gained that honor not by a growth spurt. The previous holder of that honor was in an adjacent state. That tree was shattered and mostly toppled by 120mph winds in 2007. That previous owner of the title is now known as the world's largest stump of the species. (no kidding) This species of tree played a significant part in an important event in our nation's history.

First of all where is it and what is it.

If you know that, you can probably figure out what event I am talking about.

(I don't know the people on the picture).

No, it is the largest of a species of large trees, but not that species.

If you were standing at the base of the tree, you would have this view or one very close to it.

That picture looks like it was taken at the Lodge at Lake Quinalt in the Olympic Rain Forest. Similar to this one, except your's seems to be taken towards the right looking at the boat dock area????: If it is not the Sitka, it may be the Western Red Cedar. I was nearly standing under it, but don't remember. I guess I couldn't see the tree for the forest (the lake, the people, the....).

You have the location correct. It is a Sitka spruce. In the morning I will post a picture of the tree that shows it basically at the edge of the grass.

As it turnd out, I am guilty of naming a slightly wrong location. I had the wrong resort.

The tree is actually on the grounds of the Rainforest Resort Village. They have a RV Park. The pictures on their website look nice. I would like to hear about it from someone who has camped there.

"Sitka Spruce", This is the World's largest spruce tree, found on the South Shore of Lake Quinault, nestled on the grounds of Rain Forest Resort Village. The Giant is our Nation's 4th largest record tree.

The event I was talking about is The Wright Bros first flight. The Wright Bros' airplane was made of Sitka spruce.

Just a sidenote:
In my last incarnation there was this roadhouse called the elm Tree Inn in Keene NY, in the Adirondacks. The owner started telling everyone he was getting married, which was a joke. Outside the Inn there was this huge elm tree stump. Probably 20 feet high. When the wedding never happened someone came down with a crane and put the guy's jeep on top of the stump which made national news.

I would guess that the thread will be shortened by at least 50%. Do you mean places we've actually been, or pictures we've actually taken at places we've actually been?

As far as the Spruce tree is concerned, I have been there, but it was many years ago, before it was thought of as anything other than a big spruce tree.

Personally, I am interested in finding out about new places. If I need to hear about them first hand, there are plenty of reviews available on the internet.

Again, just my thoughts, but yes, both.

I mean we could fill literally the whole bandwidth of this forum's capacity with pictures we find on the internet. While it would be interesting to see the pictures, overall it might not be such a good thing.

Where Is This?
A review of the rules:

"WHERE IS THIS?" will be a fun quiz about different photo shots from around North America. This will be a test to see if you absorb all that fantastic scenery while you are traveling.

Rules:

You may post a photo, (from your travels) and you should give some hint as to the location. (left, right, up, down, center or bullseye, Left of bullseye, etc.

It will be up to you to confirm a correct answer.

If the photo is not identified within 7 days you should then divulge the location for everyone to appreciate. (you may need to give more clues as each day passes)

A poster will win with the general location of the photo but actual location (highway number, etc) will get extra bragging rights.


It will be of greater interest to other readers if you can post pictures, or links, when you confirm the location to the winner.

It may help, readers to come, if each response refers to the "POST #" that contained the quiz.

The point of this thread is to promote traveling to all areas of North America and to experience the enjoyment and promote memories that will be refreshed through the medium of photography.

I'm sorry, I did not read it that way. I assume you are referencing the part I highlighted. I interpreted that to mean any picture of somewhere we had travelled. In any case I will not be posting anymore, because we don't take many, and most of them would be of interest only to us or family.

I gave my friend (the ATPL one) a model of that airplane for Christmas. I will pass that tidbit onto him.

massey, am sorry that I did not follow the rules and diverted the thread somewhat with my submarine photo. I have not travelled as extensively as many on this forum - just do not have a lot of "been there" photos to share.
